Passò poi sotto l’egemonia di Firenze.volterraFounded by the Etruscans, Volterra was one of the twelve towns of Entruria, and was a wealthy economic and commercial centre. The town particularly flourished economically and experienced population growth in the 4C BC. With an Etruscan defence system, Volterra became the most important strategic base of the lower Arno valley. After decisively subjecting itself under Rome around 260 BC, Volterra built a conspicuous municipality endowed with extensive autonomy. Toward the end of the second Punic war ( 205 BC), we find Volterra among the eight towns of the dissolved Etruscan dodicapolis who sent grain, arms, and naval equipment to the consul Publio Cornelio Scipione. In the civil war between Mario and Silla, the town underwent a long siege. Dominated by the Longobardi from the end of the 6C until 774, it was then subjected to the French. From the 11C on, it was governed by bishops. The town was raised to the status of municipality at the end of the 11C, until 1340, when it became domain of the Belforti family. It later came under the supremacy of Florence.
