Pomerance ( at one time Ripomerance) originates as a mediaeval castle, its rule being contested for several centuries between the bishops and the municipality of Volterra. Despite the privileges assigned to it in 1186 by the future emperor Enrico VI, it seems that power was maintained by the municipality. It was occupied by Piccinino in 1431, and looted by the army of King Alfonso d´Aragona in 1447, later coming under the direct government of Florence in 1472. In 1513, with the return of the Medici in Florence, it gained back its right to elect its own magistrates and after the fall of the Florentine Republic it remained under the power of the dukes of Tuscany, sharing in their lot until the unification of Italy. The area is famous for the boric acid steam jets which were discovered in the second half of the 18C.

The locality, was inhabited as early as the Roman era, but became important in medieval times for its fortress, which was built between the 12C and 13C by Prato to defend the bridge over the Ombrone river. Between the 13C and 18C it was an inland port for Prato, where merchants of Prato took the road along the Arno and Ombrone rivers leading to Pisa and Livorno. However, the main reason for the municipality’s notoriety is its Medicean Villa, which was built for Laurence the Magnificent by the architect Giuliano da Sangallo in 1479. Here, important events of the Laurentine Court were held, and is where the dark tragedy of Francesco I and Bianca Cappello took place in 1587. When Florence was the Capital of Italy, the Villa was the residence of the ‘bella Rosina’, the morganatic wife of Vittorio Emanuele II.

The roots of the modern settlement go back to the second half of the 13C, when the Florentines destroyed the castle above, forcing its population to move to the village below. The castle was founded in 1155 by Siena and the Guidi counts. The history of Poggibonsi is linked to the bitter struggle between Florence and Siena over the control of the town. In 1293 it was finally subjected to Florence , although continuing to determine its own political and administrative statutes.

Pitigliano is of ancient origins and was an Etruscan and Roman town. It is also identified with the ´vicus toriani´ in the Longobard era, although certain documentation only dates back to 1061, the year in which Pope Niccoḷ II entrusted the parish of Pitigliano to the bishop of Sovano. While the history of Pitigliano is not clear until the beginning of the 13C, it is known for certain that the castle belonged to the Aldobraneschi counts for some time. In 1293 a long period of lordship by the Orsini began, but ended in 1562 after a people´s uprising in favor of the Medici. This town is the birthplace of Francesco Zuccarelli, landscapist and founder of the Royal Art Accademy of London.

The origin of this town may be Roman. As from the 12th century it had been a fortified castle, a feudal holding of the counts Guidi di Modgliana, and later an independent municipality with a judicial prefecture until the 14th century, under the protection of Pistoia, with which the town had many disputes. Subsequently, it passed under the jurisdiction of the Captain of the Mountains of Pistoia, and lastly, under the rule of the Medici. In this area, beginning from the early 1800s, two paper mills made use of the waters of the river Lima.

The city of Pistoia, of Roman origin, the status of a royal city by the Lombards, who made it home to an independent steward of the Dukes of Lucca and Florence, became common since 1105. In the twelfth century, its policy was oriented towards an alliance with Pisa, which is testified also by the artistic work of Giovanni Pisano. During the thirteenth century fought a long series of wars against Florence, Lucca and Bologna. In 1401 it was stated firmly Pistoia on the hegemony of Florence. In 1643 he was attacked by bands of the Barberini, during the war between the Farnese of Parma and Pope Urban VIII, but rejected the military.
The origin of Pisa is clouded in legends, and its foundation is attributed as far back as to the ancient Romans, to colonisation in the 13-12C BC, or to the people of Liguria, of whom a number of archaeological findings have been discovered. As from the 5C it was dominated by the Etruscans who placed under Volterra. From the 2C BC is found to be linked with Rome, to which its participation in the second Punic war (1218) would attest. During the Barbaric invasions its importance as a port city remained intact, and in the 9C is became a county of the French, who were fighting against the Bizanines, Venetians and the Saracens, later becoming an autonomous marine power. With its participation in the first crusade it laid its foundations for trade with the Orient. It is officially spoken of as a republic starting from the death of Matilde di Cannossa, in 1115, but in reality, Pisa was already attributed with political autonomy in 1081 by Enrico IV. The Medici and Lorena also largely influenced the development of the town. Galileo Galilei was born here.

The origins of Piombino can be traced back to the 11C, when it appears in a document as a fortified place belonging to the monks of the near-by abbey by the name of Falesia. Because of its importance, between the 12-13C Genoa attempted to conquer Piombino a number of times. In 1399 it was raised to the status of county seat of the new state under the lordship of the Appiani. It was then entrusted to the Florentines and the Aragonesi di Napoli. Toward the end of the 17C it was occupied by the English, the French and then by Naples, only to be taken back by Napoleon. With the treaty of Vienna Piombino was assigned to the grand-duchy of Tuscany, but in 1860 the people of Piombino chose to become part of the kingdom of Sardinia.

The origin of Pieve Santo Stefano has its roots, first with the Umbri-Sarsinati and later is identified with the Roman settlement called Suppetia, however its first historical mention appears only in 967 with the name Oppidum Verone. In an official document signed by Ottone I in which Goffredo of Ildebrando, probably a nobleman related to the Counts Galbino and Montedoglio, was entrusted with authority over Pieve Santo Stefano. In 1220, the feudal holding appears to have come under the jurisdiction of Arezzo, but because of its location, the town was the object of a long dispute between Perugia and Città di Castello. In 1318 Pieve became a possession of the Tarlati and then in 1385 of the Florentine district that established an important prefecture here. In 1545 it was elevated and assigned a vicarage with jurisdiction over Caprese and Chiusi della Verna.
