Pervenuto allo stato fiorentino all’inizio dell’epoca moderna, Pelago fu costituito capoluogo di comunità nel 1808 dall’amministrazione napoleonica.pelago3The earliest documented citation of Pelago dates back to 1089. It was owned for a considerable period of time by the Guidi di Poppi counts, to whom a number of donations were made by the monks of Vallombrosa. The castle however, was ruled by the feudal family of the Cattani da Daicceto from the beginning in the 13C. Pelago came under the Florentine State at the beginning of the modern era, and in 1808 it was constituted a county seat of the local community by the Napoleonic administration.

PeccioliPeccioli

Dal 1406, escluso un breve periodo di occupazione da parte del Piccinino, capitano del duca di Milano, fu sotto l’egemonia della repubblica fiorentina.peccioliAs a mediaeval castle, property of the Gherardesca counts, it was sold in the 12C to the bishop of Volterra. In 1163 it was conquered by Pisa, only to pass in 1284, after the defeat of Pisa at Melloria, to the protection of Florence, who the following year handed it back to Pisa. From 1406, except for a short period of occupation by Piccinino, a captain of the duke of Milan, it was under the supremacy of the Florentine Republic.

Per secoli quasi isolato dal resto del mondo, ebbe un certo sviluppo nel 1841, con l’apertura della strada carrozzabile tosco-romagnola.palazzuolo_sul_senioIn medieval times the area of the municipality was named the ‘podere degli Ubaldini’ ( country property of the Ubaldini), being a feudal property of this powerful organised clan. However, after the Ubaldini were forced to give the land to Florence in 1362, the place took on the name of ‘Podere Fiorentina’. After the remaining feudal resistance was brought under Florentine control in 1373, a public building designed as a residence of the Vicar was built: this is the origin of the name ´Palazzuolo´. The town, which is divided in two parts by the Senio river flowing through it, became an official ´mountain community´. Under the Medici the vicarage was transformed into a military captain’s office, and with the Leopoldine reforms in 1772, only the offices of the podestà remained in place. For centuries it was practically isolated from the rest of the world, developing only in 1841 with the opening of the road connecting Tuscany to Romagna.

PalaiaPalaia

Dal 1406, quando si sottomise a Firenze, tranne un breve periodo di occupazione da parte delle truppe dei Visconti di Milano, fu sotto la signoria dei fiorentini.palaiaAround the 11C, era in which the first definite reports of the town are found, Palaia was a castle which was partly the property of the bishops of Lucca, and partly of a local feudal family. Following this, imperial decrees, from that of Enrico VI (1191) to that of Carlo IV (1335), confirmed the towns position under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the bishop of Lucca, while at the same time affirming it under the civil and political authority of Pisa. From 1406, when it subjected itself to Florence, apart from a brief period when it was occupied by the troops of the Visconti di Milano, it was under the Lordship of the Florentines.

Ortignano RaggioloOrtignano Raggiolo

Nel 1357 il territorio fu annesso a quello della Montagna Fiorentina.ortignanoraggioloDuring the 12C Ortignano was a feudal holding of the Guidi di Poppi counts, whose rights were confirmed by Emperor Frederick II in 1248. Later, due to some privileges granted to the town by Charles IV in 1356, Arezzo claimed jurisdiction over half of this municipal territory. Ortignano came permanently under Florentine control toward the end of the 14C together with all of the territory of Arezzo. Raggiolo was instead under the control of the Ubertini di Chitignano who were divested of their castle in 1325 by Guido Tarlati, Bishop and Lord of Arezzo. After his death, Pier Saccone and his son Marco took control, however, these eagerly submitted to the rule of the Republic of Florence. In 1357 the territory was annexed to that of the ´Florentine Mountain´.

Orciano PisanoOrciano Pisano

Nel 1783, con la soppressione dei feudi granducali, fu costituito in comunità autonoma e sottoposto di nuovo alla giurisdizione di Lari, per passare poi al vicariato di Rosignano.orcianopisanoAs a mediaeval castle by the name of Usiano which was united with that of Scotriano, it is still found to be in use in the year 1323. It was placed under the civil and criminal jurisdiction of Lari, from which it was detached in 1630, when, with decree of the Grand-duke Ferdinando II, it was elevated to the position of fief and was entrusted to Roberto degli Obizzi da Padova, to whom the title of Marquis was bestowed. In 1783, with the suppression of the feudal properties of the grand-duke, Orciano was constituted an autonomous community and put back under the jurisdiction of Lari, only to pass later to the vicarage of Rosiganano.

OrbetelloOrbetello

Assediato vanamente dai francesi nel 1646, passò nel 1708 agli austriaci e dal 1746 ai Borboni di Napoli ed infine nel granducato di Toscana.orbetelloOrbitello boasts extremely ancient origins, in fact, is thought that it already existed as early as the 7C BC, and it was a prosperous centre in pre-Roman times, (the remains of its several-layered walls date back to the 4C BC). In the late middle ages, probably in the Carlinga period around the 9C, its territory was included in the patrimony of the Roman abbey of the Tre Fontane, which in 1269 was forced to conceed it as a fief to Ildebrando il Rosso, a member of the Aldobrandeschi di Sovana, although they did manage to maintain their formal rights. In the 14C, after a period of domination by Orvieto, Orbitello came under the control of the Republic of Siena. When the Imperial and Medicean forces gained victory in the war with Siena in 1557, Orbitello was made capital of the small ´Stato dei Presidi´. The French attempted with-out succes to besiege the town in 1646, which later came under Austrian rule in 1708, under the Borboni in 1746, finally being included in the grand-duchy of Tuscany.

MurloMurlo

Comunque in questo periodo di tempo il territorio fu oggetto di contesa tra Siena e Firenze che in periodi alterni lo conquistarono.murloReports of the castle of Murlo are found from the mediaeval era, but the discovery of archaeological remains from the Etruscan age indicate that the area was inhabited in earlier periods. In 1151 the fief of Murlo was bequeathed by Count Ugolino di Rannuccio Ardengheschi to the bishopric of Siena, with which it remained until the suppression of all fiefs with the grand-duchy decree of the 18C. However, in the same period the area was the object of conflicts between Siena and Florence, who alternately conquered the town.

MulazzoMulazzo

Passò poi alla repubblica cisalpina e al regno italico per finire sotto gli Estensi.mulazzoFrom the 12C Mulazzo was property of the Spino Secco, a minor branch of the Malaspina family, in 1221 becoming the main town of a territory under a feudal system. The exiled Dante Alighieri was almost certainly hosted here by Francesco Malaspina, who in the name of the marquis, negotiated peace with the bishop of Luni. During the 16C Mulazzo was under the political range of Florence. The last marquis was Azzo Giacinto III, a noble and political progressionist who welcomed Napoleon´s army by raising the flag on the castle tower. Mulazzo then came into the hands of the Cisalpine Republic and the Kingdom of Italy, finally coming under the Estensi.

Montopoli in Val d´ArnoMontopoli in Val d´Arno
