The ´castellun Aginulfi´ which was positioned on the hills near the modern-day centre, is thought to be the historical cite from which Montignoso arose. It was considered by the Byzantines to be a point of great strategic importance. After a Longobard by the name of Rotari conquered it in the 7C, it became the seat of a consortium of nobles, while toward the 10C the bishop of Luni seems to have held jurisdiction over a third of the castle. In the 13C lordship was held by a branch of the Vallecchia and Di Corvaia families. During the second half of the 13C Montignoso came under the dominion of Lucca, passing in 1514 to the Florentines, and later to the French. In 1847 the community came under the Estensi, under whom it remained, despite the discontent of the population, until the year 1859.

It is possible that Montieri was of Etruscan origin, most it is more probable that it is of Roman origin, and derives its name from the expression “mons aeris”, which refers to its rich underground mineral resources in the past. It was bequeathed in the year 896 by alberto Riccio, marquis of Tuscany, to the bishopric of Volterra, under which jurisdiction it remained, despite a number of events, in the following centuries. As early as the first half of the 12C Montieri was established as a centre of mineral resources and was subjected to continual pressure from the municipality of Siena who intended to gain political and economic control. The silver mines, which were the most important in Tuscany at that time, were always in the hands of bankersof Florence and Siena, who were grossly indebted to the bishops of Volterra. In the Medicean era, in 1608, Montieri became a fief and was raised to the status of marquidom by the grand-duke Ferdinando I, remaining so until 1749.

The first certain citations of the castle of Monteciano are found in 1189, when it was subjected to the jurisdiction of the bishop of Volterra, Ildebrando Pannochheschi, whose authority was confirmed in 1224 by the Emperor Federico II. Claims over Monticiano were also made by the city of Siena, who occupied it after the battle of Benevento in 1266. In 1554 Monticiano came under Medici government, but in 1629 it was taken away from Ferdinando II and offered as a fief to count Orso Pannocchieschi d´Elci. The ´Bagni di Petriolo´ are found in the locality, known in mediaeval times for their healing properties and sulphur waters.

The history of the castle of Monteverdi is linked to that of the abbey of San Pietro a Palazzuolo (founded in 754), which was donated to the nuns in 1063 by Count Gherardo della Gherardesca. In 1230 Monteverdi was place under the political tutelage of the municipality of Massa and in 1308 the town was surrounded with walls. However, in 1340, as it became too difficult for the inhabitants to assure the town´s safety, and it was handed over to Volterra. The town was conquered in 1405 by Florence, in 1431 by the Appiani and in 1447 by the troops of Alfonso d´Aragona, returning to Volterra in 1449, who retained it until it became Florentine territory in 1472. In 1665 the Grand-duke Ferdinando II exalted it to the status of feudal property of the grand-duke, and was entrusted to the nobleman of Volterra, Ferdinando Incontri.

During the 12C Montevarchi was the marketplace of the settlement of that name belonging to the Marquis of Monte Santa Maria, that stood above the Poggio of Cappuccini. The Guidi counts ruled and maintained power until 1254, when the settlement became property of Florence. Its lords regained control after the battle of Montaperti, but Montevarchi was again handed over to Florence in 1273 by Count Guido Selvatico of Ruggiero di Dovadola. The town suffered heavy damages in 1287, when the Ghibellini of Arezzo attacked their fellow Guelfi citizens who had found refuge here. Because of its subjection to Florence, Montevarchi was attacked by Arezzo in 1289, and by the armies of Arrigo VII in 1312. Thereafter, in 1338, protective walls surrounding the town were built; Montevarchi became in that period the seat of a Prefecture which held authority over Ricasoli and four other rural communities.

The earliest documentation of this town is of the 11C. Montespertoli was of no particular importance until the 15C, when it was cited mainly in relation to other localities that today are part of its territory. The few surviving public documents identify it as a free municipality, where the abbey of Passignano, the Alberti Counts and the nobility of this country community held all power and ownership. It was probably toward the second half of the 12C that the town was joined to the Florentine territory. It is thought that the reason behind the development of Montespertoli was a request to transfer the market here, traditionally held for centuries in San Piero, a request which Florence conceded to in 1465, probably due to the fact that Montespertoli was situated along a road of considerable importance, Via Volterrana.

Its origins go back to the founding of a convent of Benedictine nuns in 1091 by Count Gherardo della Gherardesca, with the county taking its name from this place. After being placed under the dominion of the Republic of Pisa, the town held noteworthy importance due to its strategic position. In 1340 it rebelled against Pisa and allied itself with Lucchino Visconti, submitting itself to the Republic of Florence in 1405. Following this, it came under the kingdom of Naples, only to be re-conquered by Florence, under whom it remained despite a succession of unstabling events, until the unification of Italy.

As a feudal castle, Monterotondo was property and residence of the Alberti counts as from the 12C, as is attested to in a concession deed by Federico I Barbarossa of the year 1163. In 1209 count Rainaldo, hier of the territory in which Monterotondo was included, placed it under the protection of Massa Marittima, under whose direct control it came between 1261 and 1263 after a succession of sales on the part of descendants of the Rainaldi counts. In 1298 Monterotondo was included in the jurisdiction of Massa, and shared in its events, being taken over in 1235 by the Republic of Siena along with the entire Massetano area, who in 1399 re-built the fortress and enlarged its fortificaltions. In the 15C Montrotondo became directly dependant on Siena, who positioned a vicar here. In 1554, after a long resistance against a coilition of Austrian, Hispanic and Medici troops, Monterotondo suffered defeat and was distroyed, after which it subjected itself to the Medici.

In the middle of the 3C Monteroni was a modest village in the countryside of Siena, and was organised as a municipality. Its development is linked to the expansion of the property of the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala of Siena, which bought land at Monteroni. In 1382 it was included in the vicarage of Lucignano d´Arbia and its request to be constituted a vicarage in its own right was not accepted. In 1554 Montroni was attacked and conquered by Imperial troops, and so came under Florentine domain, under which it remained until 1860, the year in which Italy was united.

The castle of Monteriggione was built by Siena in the second decade of the 13C as a military base on the border with Florence, but documents citing the place are found as early as 1126 and 1154, when it was controlled by the noble Staggia family. Florence and the bishop of Volterra opposed Siena without success, who built here a fortified settlement. The importance of Montreggione grew in the 14C. In 1554, because of the betrayal of the Florentine outlaw Giovanni Zeti, who had been entrusted with command of the garrison, Monteriggione fell into the hands of Florentine Imperial troops.
