The earliest document in which the name of this town is cited is 1025. It seems that at this time the land was almost entirely a feudal holding of the Abbey of Santa Reparata a Salto ( becoming part of Vallobrosa in the year 1112). The Emperors Arrigo VI and Federico II placed the Guidi di Modigliana counts as rulers in two separate official documents, the first in the year 1191, and the latter in 1220. Unable to defend itself from the war-mongering Ghibelline clan, the abbot of Santa Reparata sold all his rights on Marradi and the surrounding land to the Florentine Republic for 1000 lire. When the Ghibellines conquered Florence, the ownership of Marradi returned to the Guidi, subsequently passing into the hands of Manfredi, Lord of Faenza, who in turn returned limited charge of it again to the Guidi and Ubaldini. From 1428 Marradi came permanently under the direction of Florence, apart from a brief period of two months when it was conquered by viscount troops.

The centre of Marliana is recorded for the first time in 1137 for having been destroyed by Montecatini. It was then re-built as a fortress was, but during struggles between the Panciatichi and Cancellieri families of Pistoia in 1314 it was conquered by allies of the Panciatichi from Lucca, who added the town to their domain until the death of Castrucciio Castracani. Along with Pistoia the town was joined to the Florentine territory, which decided its fate until the unification of Italy. The territory includes the villages of Casore, (first under Ligure, and then Roman rule), Avagli and the hamlet of Serra, all of ancient origin.

The discovery of an underground dwelling in 1830 confirms that Marciano was of Etruscan origin, and it later became a Roman colony as its geographical name indicates. At the turn of the 13C it became the property of the church of Arezzo; it was later owned by the Tarlati, and in 1385 became part of the Florentine State. As a frontier outpost, the castle was heavily fortified during the 15C and its name is closely linked to a historical battle that took place on the hill of Scannagallo between the Mediceo-Spanish army and the French Senese army in 1554.

A number of archaeological findings on the near-by hills reveal that Marciana was inhabited in Roman times, and was originally an autonomous mediaeval community which included Marcia di Poggio ( now Marciana) and Marciana di Marina ( now Marciana Marina). It was placed under the political domain of the Republic of Pisa, who fortified it and made it a military bastion, equal to all the islands of the archipelago of Tuscany. In 1399 Marciana, together with the island of Elba, came under the lordship of the principality of Piombino degli Appiani. In 1799 in came to be part of the French Republic, and when that rule came to and end, it was joined to the grand-duchy of Tuscany.

The first citation ofthe castle of Manciano is found in a deed of Pope Clemente III, when in 1188 it was given to the church of Sovana. In that period Manciano was already under Aldobrandeschi control, and 1274 it was assigned to a branch of the counts of Sovana. In the early 14C Manciano was occupied by the Orvientani, later being bought by the Baschi, lords of the near-by Montemarano castle. Manciano was conquered in 1416 by Siena, later sharing in the events which effected this rule. In the Giolitti period Manciano developed a strong farming communtiy, known as the ´Lega miglioramento campagnoli´ ( farmer´s progress movement), and which brought about the taking over of the vast Marsigliana estate.

As early as the 6C a substantial Etruscan settlement, or ´Heba´, rose on the cite of the modern town of Magliano, and was the head town over a vast area. From 287 BC this area came under Roman rule, becoming an important colony. The first document that mentions Magliano dates back to 1096-7, and confirms that the castle here was property of the Aldobrandeschi counts. Magliano was contested by Siena and the Santa Fiora branch of the Aldobrandeschi family, until 1400, when Siena established control, finally losing power in 1555. In 1559 it was included in the grand-duchy of Tuscany, and Cosimo I entrusted it as a fief to his leiutenant general Cornelio Bentivoglio di Ferrara, until the Lorena cancelleded all grand-duchy fiefs in 1751.

The first historical mention of Lucignano, which according to one story was founded by the Roman Licinia family, goes back to the 11C, where it appears in some parchments that belonged to the Abbey of Agnano in Val d’Ambra. There is little documentation regarding its history until the middle of the 12C, but it is believed that Lucignano was a free town during this whole period, although under the indirect influence of Arezzo. After the battle of Campaldino, Lucignano came under the power of Siena and in 1336 Perugia took control of the town according to the terms of an agreement with Florence. The Duke of Athens ruled over the town for a short period, and then in August 1343 the town regained its independence, only to fall again under the Florentine rule. Only in 1553 did Lucignano come under the control of the Medici.

Lucca was founded by people of the Liguria region (its name comes from the Celtic-Ligurian root word ´Luk´ meaning marshland, probably indicating the ancient flooding of lake Bientina). It later came under Etruscan dominion and then became a Roman municipality (89 BC). Its initial development was certainly aided by its position on an important cross-roads, leading to the Cassia road in one direction, and the Clodia and the Aurelia in the other. The importance of the town grew, however, under the Goths and then, during the Longobard era, when it became county seat of Tuscia. In 1118 it was raised to the status of free municipality. When Castruccio Castracani died in 1328, the town started to decline. In 1799 it was occupied by French troops, and democratic ideas reappeared: but not for long, as Napoleone raised Lucca to status principality, entrusting it to Felice and Elisa Baiocchi Bonaparte. Eventually Lucca was conceded to the grand-duke of Tuscany and then to the kingdom of Sardinia. Among its many illustrious sons of note are the musician Gaicomo Puccini and the engineer Giovanni Giorgi, who conceived the electro-magnetic system known as M.K.S.

First mentioned in a document dated 1059, Loro Ciuffenna was a feudal holding of the Guidi counts since the 11C. After having been temporarily leased to an aristocrat named Ugo, probably related to the Umbertini, the village subsequently came under the authority of the Florentine Republic in 1293. In 1646, Loro was given to the Florentine family of the Capponi as a feudal holding along with the title of Marquise, until the final abolition of all feudal rights within the grand-duke´s domain. Among its eminent citizens were the painter Carlo Portelli, the poet Bianco Dell´Anciolina and Alessandro dal Borrro, a mercenary captain .
