Nel 1559 fu venduta a Eleonora di Toledo, moglie di Cosimo I. A partire dal XVI secolo fu oggetto di frequenti scorrerie di saraceni e tunisini, tanto che per ripopolarla nel 1561 Cosimo I promosse l’immigrazione di una colonia greca.isola-del-giglioThe first certain historical citations date back to the 9C, when the island, together with that of Giannutri, was given as a fief to the abbey of the Tre fontane in the so called ´false cetificate´ of Charles Magne and Leone III. In the 12C and 13C it was entrusted under a feudal arrangement to the Aldobrandeschi, who between 1339 and 1345 handed over all their possesions to the Republic of Siena. In the same period however, the influence of Pisa continued because it had been controlling the island´s coast-line from the 11C. After the fall of Pisa in 1406, the island came under the domain of Florence until the occupation of Alfonso d´Aragona in 1447, only to be given up to the Piccolomini family in 1460. In 1559 it was sold to Eleonora di Toledo, the wife of Cosimo I. The island of Giglio was the object of frequent raids by the Sarceans and Tunisians from the 16C, so much so that Cosimo I, in order to re-populate the island, encouraged imigration from one of the Greek colonies.

Incisa in Val d´ArnoIncisa in Val d´Arno

Entrato a far parte, con Cascia, della nuova comunità di Reggello nel 1773 il comune ritornò autonomo nel 1807.incisa-in-val-d-arnoIncisa may have its roots in an ancient Roman settlement, the existence of the ´castello dell´Ancisa´ being documented as early as the first half of the 12C. It was however, enlarged and fortified by the Florentines in 1223, after a revolt against it. Its strategic position made it an ideal point of defence for blocking the attacks of the enemies of Florence. In 1337 l´Ancisa is found to have its own laws. In 1363 the castle was overtaken by troops of Pisa, destroyed, and subsequently rebuilt by Florence. Troops of the Prince d´Orange occupied and oppressed it in 1529. In the same year the commoner Lucrezia Mozzanti drowned in the Arno river
‘ the embraces of the enemy Fatherland hating’. The town became part of the Reggello municipality, together with Cascia, in 1773, only to return to autonomous rule in 1807.

ImprunetaImpruneta

When defeated by Florence in 1135, they were forced to go back to town, however the development of the nucleus of Impuneta ( for the first time cited in a document in the middle 11C) is linked to its parish church. Around the sanctuary a village with a substantial population formed, while on the surrounding hills a number of rural settlements were established. The vicinity of Florence, and the amenities that the area had to offer, meant that the wealthy of the city built here several ‘case dei signori’ (large country homes). Together with Galuzzo, Impruteta was elected the county seat of a union of the country and hills South of Florence.

GuardistalloGuardistallo

GuardistalloA castle of Longobard origin, as its name indicates, in the 11C Guardistallo was a fief of the Gherardesca family, which in 1154 was donated to the bishop of Volterra, to whom it belonged over the following centuries. After coming under the dominion of Pisa, in 1345 it formed a rebellion when that republic was under threat from Lucchino Visconti. Reduced to obedience, it shared in the lot of Pisa until the victory of Florence in 1406. In 1447 it was occupied by the army of Alfonso di Aragona, King of Naples. Soon after, it was re-conquered by the Florentines. In 1738-39 it was conceded as a fief by Francesco II who assigned it to Carlo Ginori, dignitary of the grand-duke´s court, giving him the title of Marquis until 1776. Guardistallo shared in the lot of the grand-dukes, coming under French dominion until the unification of Italy.

GrossetoGrosseto

In epoca successiva passò sotto i Medici e i Lorena al tempo del granducato.grosseto-1Archeological discoveries dating back to the 5C and 7C confirm that in the Etruscan era there was a small settlement on the site of the modern town. However, the real development of the area got underway in the late middle ages, while the near-by Etruscan settlement of Roselle fell into gradual ruin. The town originally developed as a stop-over along the Via Aurelia, and is cited for the first time in two documents, one of the year 803 and the other of the year 973, (when Grosseto was identified as a castle communtiy), and which testify to the area´s submission to the dynasty of the Aldobrandeschi counts. It was not until the early 14C that the town started to detach itself from this dynasty, when it sided with the Abati del Malia family. The town then came into the hands of Siena who reclaimed the marsh-lands and fortified the town. In later times, during the grand-duchy period, Grosseto was ruled by the Medici and the Lorena.

Greve in ChiantiGreve in Chianti

Tra i suoi figli illustri primeggia il celebre navigatore Giovanni da Terrazzano.greve-in-chianti-wineIn the early medieval centuries, Greve developed as the ‘market-place’ of Monteficalle and other near-by castles. Until the middle of the 15C it was not even a parish, and in the census of 1551 the village counted only 92 inhabitants. However, Rapid growth, took place around the middle of the 16C, favoured by its position on a cross-roads leading from the Chianti area toward Florence in one direction, and from Valdipesa toward Figline in the other. In the modern era it became a centre of noteworthy importance ( in 1773 Pietro Leopoldo wrote “ Il luogo grande e pulito” ), its growth continuing in the 19C. Among its illustrious sons is the navigator Giovanni da Terrazzano.

GiuncugnanoGiuncugnano

giuncugnanoE’ composto da sette villaggi, alcuni dei quali – come Capoli e Magliano – vantano un’antichità di citazioni documentarie più che millenaria; ma il paese sembra essere sempre vissuto ai margini dei grandi eventi: prima sotto Lucca, passò a metà del Quattrocento agli Estensi e seguì le vicende consuete dei comuni dell’alta Garfagnana.giuncugnanoGiucugnano was made up of seven villages, some of which, as in the case of Capoli and Magliano, boast a number of citations dating back over a thousand years. However, the town seems to have always lived on the boarders of important events. Firstly under Lucca, later, passing in the middle of the 5C to the Estensi and following the same historical events as the other municipalities of the mountains of Garfaganana.

GavorranoGavorrano

Passato alla famiglia Malavolti entrò quindi definitivamente nell’orbita di Siena per poi, dopo l’occupazione da parte delle truppe di Alfonso d’Aragona, re di Napoli, seguirne le sorti.gavorranoThe first historical citation of Gavorrano dates back to the year 1164, when Emperor Federico I, also called ´Barbarossa´, confirmed the Alberti di Magona counts as proprietors of the castle. Toward the mid 12C Gavaorrano came under the Pannocchieschi counts of the Elci branch. After this, the municipality of Volterra gained control, selling part of its property to Siena. The town was then ruled by the Malavolti family, subsequently coming under the political range of Siena, and after the occupation by the troops of Alfono d´Aragona, under the king of Naples.

Gambassi TermeGambassi Terme

In 1268 the citizens of the town, considering the authority of the bishops unbearable, subjected themselves to San Gimignano, which was traditionally an enemy of Volterra. In 1293, with the peace of Fucecchio, the area was taken away from San Gimignano and joined to Florence. In 1432 Gambassi was occupied and raided by militia of the Viscount. With the Leopoldine reforms in 1774, the podestà was removed from office and the castle was put under the directive of the community of Montaione, only regaining autonomy in 1917.

GallicanoGallicano

Nel 1847 tornò sotto gli Estensi.gallicanoThe first historical citation of Gallicano dates back to the year 771, in a contract stipulated between a certain Marcellino di Controne and Peredeo, the bishop of Lucca. The name of the town derives from a certain Cornelio Gallicano, who is registered in the ´tabula alimerntaria´ of Traiano, between the colonies of Veleiati and those of Lucca. After being dominated by the Rolandinghi, in was then subjected to the sovereignty of the Pope. When Barga came under Florentine rule, Gallicano remained with Lucca, who in 1347 raised it to seat of a vicarage. In 1370 the people of Gallicano, instigated by the exile of Lucca Rolando Antelminelli, rebelled against the republic. In 1430 the town expressed its loyalties with the Estensi. Finally in April 1451, in an attempt to ease the continual disagreements between Lucca and Modena, Niccoḷ V ordered Gallicano to return under the domain of Lucca. In 1847 however, it came back under the Estensi..
