Arretium was originally one of the most powerful Etruscan holdings. A loyal ally of Rome from the end of the 4C BC, Arezzo was eventually drawn into several civil conflicts, suffering losses and destruction during the war between Mario and Silla. The city started to become a free municipality during the 12C. In the following century, Arezzo waged wars against the surrounding cities, gaining some victories, especially against Siena and Florence, which in 1288 sent a powerful army against their rival. Arezzo defeated Siena near the village of Pieve al Toppo, but they surrendered to the Florentines at Campaldino. In 1343 Arezzo regained its independence until it permanently fell under the rule of Florence in 1384. Following the French occupation, the city revolted only to return under the grand-duke’s power. Some notable persons were born in Arezzo like Caio Clinio Mecenate, one of the most authoritative persons in Augustan Rome, Guido Monaco creator of the modern musical scale, Margaritone and Giorgio Vasari both poets and architects, and Francesco Redi the famous author of Bacco in Toscana.

The earliest citation of Arcidosso dates back to a document of May 860 AD which mentions houses and land given on lease-hold by the abbey of San Salvatore, under whose juristdiction the land oriniginally found itself. In the early 12C, as is confirmed in a deed of June 1121, the Aldobrandeschi counts built a fortress here when they were lords over the territory. In 1331 the Republic of Siena managed to gain power over Arcidosso thanks to the military achievaments of Guidoriccio da Fogliano. The following year Siena compensated the Aldobrandeschi for the loss they had suffered with the amount of 10,000 gold florins. Giandomenico Peri, known as the farmer-poet, and Davide Lazzaretti, founder of the ´Giurisdavidici´ ascetic movement, were both born here.

The Castle of Anghiari is first mentioned in 11C documents under the name of Castrum Angulare or Anglare. Originally it was a feudal holding of the Counts of Galbino, a branch of the Bartolani di Montato family. The Castle was donated by this family to the Monastery of Camaldoli, and it prospered under their jurisdiction benefiting from relative freedom enjoyed by the monastery, as shown in the municipal statutes of the 13C. Such autonomy ceased in 1322 when the Tarlati of Pietramala took possession of Anghiari, and the town remained under their control until 1384 (excluding 1339-1352, when Perugia controlled the town). Finally, in 1385 Anghiari came under the power of the lordship of Florence and was subsequently elected the official vicarage seat, including almost all the territory once owned by the Tarlati; in 1440 a pitched battle took place near Anghiari which sanctioned permanent control by Florence over the Casentino and Val Tiberina territories, thus putting an end to the repeated viscount threats in the region.

The castle of Altopascio is recorded for the fist time in the year 952. In mediaeval times it was the famous centre of the order of the ´Ospidalieri´ (a religious order that was dedicated to caring for the sick), also called the ´Cavalieri di Altopascio´. They founded a hospice here – cited for the first time in 1084 – which assisted and hosted wayfarers and pilgrims on the ancient Francigena road. Altopascio was a possession of the Republic of Lucca until 1338, after which, along with most of the Valdinievole area, it was passed to Florence. In 1325 a historical battle was fought here, in which the Florentines were overthrown by the militia of Lucca, who were allies of Castruccio Castracani degli Antelminelli.

The main part of the town was a feudal holding of Count Guidi, and later was a property of the cathedral of Pistoia and of the Florentine Pazzi family. The town was fortified by Castruccio Castracani in 1325, during a siege of Pistoia, and some years later was raided by the troops of King Giovanni of Bohemia. The town took part, together with near-by Montale, also under the Mediceo and Lorenese Great Duke, in a rebellion over the reforms of Pietro Leopoldo in 1787. In 1860 the town’s citizens voted in favour of becoming part the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.

The birth of Abbadia San Salvadore is linked to that of the Benedictine abbey of the same name, which is cited as early as the year 745, and around which the settlement developed in the 12C. The monks exercised authority over the castle for some time, but in 1347 it was sold to the Republic of Siena, and it was along with Siena that it became part of the Florentine Republic in 1555. In 1880, twenty years after it was united to the rest of Italy, the exploitation of the mercury resources of Mount Amaiata began.
