SoranoSorano

Fu solo nel 1608 che cessò il dominio degli Orsini per passare definitivamente nel granducato di Toscana.sorano2The locality is of Etruscan origin, and citations of the fortress of Sorano date back to 1172, when a contract was stipulated between the counts Giacomo and Ranieri di Bartolomeo, members of the family of lords, with the town being subsquently controlled under feudal rights of the Aldobrandeschi dynasty. In 1293 Sorano was handed down to the Orsini, and together with the near-by Pitigliano, became a strong-hold of the Roman family in its wars with Siena. It was not until 1608 that the Sorano rule ended, and the town came to be included in the grand-duchy of Tuscany.

SinalungaSinalunga

Nel 1553 era stato conquistato dalle truppe imperiali e consegnato ai duchi medicei.sinalungaSinalunga is well documented in the 12C when it belonged to the Cacciaconti family, but its parish church of San Pietro ad Mensulas is documented as early as the 8C, with the Di Asinalunga holding power until 1864. At the beginning of the 14C Sinalunga came under the domain of Siena. In 1399 it was briefly passed into the hands of Galeazzo Visconti, who had a fortress built which was later destroyed by Ferdinando I dei Medici in 1590. In 1553 Sinalunga was conquered by Imperial troops and handed over to the Medici dukes.

SillanoSillano

Il paese seguì successivamente le vicende storiche della Garfagnana.sillanoCited for the first time in a document of the year 793, the town of Sillano was originally a fief of the Malaspina and of local noble lords, the Doraio, also known as the Dalli. SignaSigna

Successivamente si distinse per la lavorazione della paglia e dei suoi famosi cappelli.signaThe historical centre, of Roman origin (Exinea), is situated where the Arno and Bisenzio rivers meet, and is mentioned for the first time as a castle in 987. It is significant that, along the entire length of the river Arno between Florence and Pisa, Signa is the only town to have a bridge, which was already documented as early as the 12C. Signa became a point of strategic importance, however, at times this brought lethal consequences to the town; for example in 1325 when Castruccio Castracani, after destroying the bridge over the Arno, set fire to the houses. After its reconstruction, Signa experienced better times, and at the end of the 18C it is recorded as being the most populated area under the grand-duke´s domain. In the middle ages the cereal production was the dominant industry here, and large mills were to be found along the river near the castle of Signa. Later, the area was better known for its production of straw and for its famous straw hats.

SienaSiena

Nel 1859 fu la prima città a deliberare l’annessione al regno d’Italia.siena_bSiena was most probably inhabited in the Etruscan era, was later a Roman ´civitas´, and in the early middle ages we find it seat of a bishopric and at the centre of a diocese of modest proportions compared to those of Volterra and Arezzo. The invasion and domination of the Longobardi (in the 6-8C) profoundly changed how the town´s territory was organised, and its borders were largely expanded. From the end of the 10C the expansion of the francigena road, the main connection between Rome and the north, laid the foundations for a rapid development of the town. The first citations of Siena as a municipality date back to 1125-1130. Toward the end of the 14C, while the expansion of Florentine territory came ever closer to that of Siena, the latter sought protection in the powerful lordship of Gian Galeazzo Visconti. In 1530 the Imperial troops of Carol V occupied the town and changed its government. In 1555 the town gave itself up and became part the Medicean State. In 1859 Siena was the first town to decide to join the kingdom of Itlay.

Sesto FiorentinoSesto Fiorentino

From the 13C the bishops of Florence gained power over the area. When the dominion of the bishops came to an end in the late 13C, Sesto came under the rule of Florence, and was head of a union of country towns, and united with Fiesole held its own prefecture. The development of Sesto progressed after Florence succeeded in reclaiming the marshes. Between the 17C and 19C the importance of Sesto increased when several industrial establishments were built here, including the well known porcelain company, founded in 1735 by Carlo Ginori.

Serravalle PistoieseSerravalle Pistoiese

In alcuni documenti del Trecento si ha menzione dell’attività di alcune ferriere del posto.seravezzaSeravezza, which is called ´Sala Vetitia´ in 10C records, ´Sala Vecchia´ in annuals of Lucca written by Tolomeo, and ´Seravetitia´ in papers of the year 1368 and 1375, was originally a fief of the Corvaia and Vallecchia lords, by way of an investiture of the emperor Federico II. It was destroyed in 1269 by the militia of Lucca, and was reunited along with its territory with the vicarage of Pietrasanta. It was later devastated by military bands from Florence lead by Rinaldo degli Albizzi and Astorre Gianni, and from 1430 was governed by Genova. In 1484 Seravezza came under Florentine rule, and the town was sold to Lucca in 1498, who held control until 1513, when an act of Leone X assigned it to the Medici.. Documents of the 14C mention the presence of a number of iron foundries in the area.

SempronianoSemproniano

Dominato successivamente dai conti Orsini fu di nuovo espugnato dalle truppe senesi fin quando, nel 1536, fu devastato irrimediabilmente da una incursione di truppe spagnole.sempronianoSemponiano was established in recent times as an autonomous municipaltiy, and possibly derives its name from the Roman family of the Sempronia. It is mentioned for the first time as a ´casale´ in a contract of sale in the year 849, and is found to be included in the donation by Pope Clemente III to the church of Sovana in the year 1188. Further, it appears with the castle of Rochette in papers concerning the devision of property between the sons of Ildebrandino degli Aldobrandeschi. During the entire 13C it was under the politcial sphere and influence of the municipality of Orvieto, coming under the power of Siena during the first half of the 14C. Subsequently, it was ruled by the Orsini counts, being once again conquered by Siena, who held power until 1536, when the town was unremediably devastated by Spanish troops in an incursion.
