A mediaeval castle was situated in this unhealthy and swampy area created by the river Cecina, and in 1157, due to a number of churchmen´s and laymen´s donations, it came to be under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Pisa. When Volterra claimed rights over the town, a dispute arose, but in 1199 it was permanently assigned to Pisa. In 1494, when urged by Pisa, Carlo VIII came to the town, a rebellion to Florentine rule took ensued, and the town enjoyed autonomy until 1508 when it subjected itself once again to Florence. In 1635 it was conceded as a fief to the nobleman of Verona, Andrea Parlotti, whose family sold it in 1737 to the Florentine, Carlo Finori, under whom it remained until the Leopoldine reforms transformed it into an autonomous community.

Rio nell´Elba could be one of the most ancient settlements of the island. The first citations date back to the Etruscans, who exploited its iron deposits. As fortified castle of significant importance was built here by Pisa in the 11C, and in 1399 it came to be part of the new State of Piombino, under the lordship of the Appiani, under which it remained despite a sequence of events, until the French gained power in 1801. In 1815 it was joined to the grand-duchy of Tuscany, with which it stayed until the unification of Italy.

The history of this main town, which was originally called Marina di Rio, is obviously linked to that of the municipality to which it belongs. It was inhabited right from prehistoric times and in the Etruscan and Roman eras it experienced the usual changes of government, from the rule of Pisa and that of the Appiani to the brief rule of Napoleon and the grand-duchy.

Possibly a settlement of Roman origin, as the root of the place-name confirms, the earliest document citing Rignano goes back to the year 1066. In the early decades of the 11C a castle developed near the parish church of San Leonino, over which the nuns of Sant´Ellero and later the monks of Vallomborsa held rights around the end of the 12C. The few surviving historical documents concerning this municipality are mostly connected to the bridge over Arno river which was built by the Florentine Republic. In the mean time, in the surrounding areas, a number of wealthy Florentines built their Villas here, taking advantage of the vicinity of Florence and the rich amenities of the area. With the regulations of the grand-duke in 1773 Regnano became one the seventy country communities included in the Florentine territory, along with other thirteen parishes formerly under the jurisdiction of Pontassieve.

The modern town of Rugello is thought to have been built on the site of an ancient settlement named Castelnuovo della pieve di Cascia, and as two papal bulls dated 1103 and 1113 confirm, Castelvecchio di Cascia was property of the Guidi counts. Several Florentine Guelphs took refuge here in 1248 when being hunted by the then dominant faction of the Ghibellines in Florence. After passing under the rule of the Florentine Republic between the end of the 13C and the beginning of the 14C, the castle of Cascia was fortified in 1385 at a cost of 2,000 pounds paid by the city of Florence. The name ´Rugello´ originates with a law of the Grand-duke Pietro Leopoldo in 1773.

The castle of Rapolano was ruled by the Scialenghi counts, subordinates of the municipality of Siena until 1175. In the mid 13C it was the seat of a podestà, but its position on the eastern border of Siena´s territory exposed it to a number of raids. In the early 14C the government of Siena decreed that its walls be demolished, as the town had become the refuge of outlaws. In the 15C Rapolano came to be part of the Medici State. Its thermal waters were renowned as early as the 13C.

Citations of the castle of Radicondoli are found from the beginning of the 13C: It seems that it was built between 1209 and 1213, while the parish church has its origins in the 10C. In 1216 it is found to be a fief of the Aldobrandeschi, but in 1299 and 1301 Siena conquered the castle. After the Medici took control of the territory of Siena, the walls and towers of Radicondoli were demolished. In the middle-ages a thriving wool corporation was founded, the charters of which still remain today.

The castle of Radiconfani is found cited for the first time in the year 973, while its village, also called ´Callemala´, is documented at least a century earlier. The castle, which was of royal property, was disputed between the abbey of Monte Amiata and Siena, but in the second half of the 13C it came to be included Church patrimony. In the mid 14C Siena managed to obtain its submission, and in 1559 it came to be part of the Medici State.

Citations of Radda are found as from 1002, when its court and castle were possessions of the Florentine abbey. In the 13C Florence claimed rights over Radda, and positioned it as head over one of the groups of three sections, or ´terzieri´, into which the Chianti area was organised in the ´Chianti league´. In 1384 Radda became head of the entire league, but during the 15C it was occupied several times and was eventually devastated to the point of needing reconstruction work.

The history of Quarrata is linked to that of Tizzana. The first historical record of Quarrata goes back to the year 997. There, the Cadolingi Counts of Feucchio and the Bishop of Pistoia owned land and properties. In the 14th century Quarrata was a major town of a community under the jurisdiction of Pistoia. Tizzana is mentioned for the first time in 1099; in the 13th century it was already a municipality under the rule of Pistoia. Victim of violent clashes between Pistoia and Florence, it later was united with Quarrata and came under the power of Florentine rule. In the elections of 1860, the town’s citizens voted in favour of becoming part of the Kingdom of Italy.
