Of Romanesque origin. The existence of Sant’Appiano can be drawn from the Etruscan-Roman period (it looks like a pagan temple was located where are now the remains of the Baptistry), then with the ruins of the Baptistry and the Romanesque parish church where are preserved the remains of Sant’Appiano that here lived in IV-V centuries and that gave the name to the village which was called Monteloro. The complex is formed by the Church, with adjoining cloister and canonical, and from what remains of the baptistery, cruciform pillars bearing capitals sculpted in Christian symbols. The pieve di Sant’Appiano, was first mentioned in a document dated 988. The present building, built in the XII-XIII centuries, still preserves its Romanesque structures in stone as the parties of the left nave, apse and the crypt. The Interior aisles with semicircular apse is very suggestive. Among the works hosted inside a fresco depicting the Madonna and child, of uncertain dating and attribution, the frescos in the vault of the chapel of the assumption, at the base of the Bell, and those along the walls of the left aisle depicting Saint Dominic, the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, Saint Anthony Abbot and St Matthew Evangelist, commissioned in 1492 by Francesco di Dante Catellini a Florentine painter near the Ghirlandaio. Outside on the side of the façade are the remains of the ancient baptistery, which was damaged by the earthquake of 1805.
