The castle was built around the year one thousand as an ancient possession of the bishops of Chiusi, whose diocese extended, at the time, until the whole area of Monte Amiata. In the thirteenth century, the complex was subjected to Siena, while being bound is the Abbey of San Salvatore al Monte Amiata Aldobrandeschi family. With the beginning of the fourteenth century, the castle was fought over by various noble families of the Sienese countryside, including even the Buonsignori, the Tolomei and Salimbeni, which they divided the property by making it an important rural complex. During the seventeenth century, the whole fort was bought by the Bourbon del Monte and, after several changes of ownership occurred during the following centuries, the complex was purchased during the last century by British writer Graham Greene, whose heirs have transformed into a popular farm. The Castle of Potentino still has its original medieval appearance, occupying two distinct areas: the first, outer, includes several buildings adjoining rural area and introduces the second, innermost, which is accessed through an arched doorway that opens along a curtain wall provided with battlements summit. The main area is the castle itself, which consists of an L around a courtyard. The building, unlike the rest of the complex, is in Renaissance style as a result of the efforts made by Siena in the fifteenth and sixteenth century, with the entrance door lintel topped by a coat of arms, on the roof you can see a small bell tower . Besides the main area there is a third distinct area where there was an Italian garden, now completely scaled and modified. Warden at the settlement, there is a chapel dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua.
