COLLEGIATACOLLEGIATE

It was an ancient church preceded by an eighth-century baptistery. The current building was built towards the end of the twelfth century or the beginning of the next century, the oldest part seems to be that corresponding to the facade and in particular the main portal. The end has been completely altered with the demolition of the apse in 1653 to build the original chorus.
The facade The church has a Latin cross with a nave and apsidal chapels. Of the three portals, the most significant is the main portal, the Lombard style, consisting of a slight emphasis on porch arch (architecture) to all sixth, decorated and supported by two pairs of columns on each side, sandstone, and knotted at the center resting on lions. On top of the columns you set the round arch. Inside the vestibule there are five columns to the left and five right with capitals decorated with acanthus leaves and animals. On the portal are two crocodiles addressed. In the center of the bezel is a figure carved in high relief on the throne held an effigy of San Damaso, but in reality to be identified with the representation of San Quirico. The decoration of the portal is developed according to Christian iconography symbolic art that comes from Lombardy.

PIEVE DI SAN PIERO A SIEVEPARISH CHURCH OF SAN PIERO A SIEVE

It was founded by the Medici family who became patrons and introduced many furnishings. Among his parish priests, it is said that there was also Leo X Medici, before becoming Pope to its location along a road that connected Florence to Mugello is a typical example of the close connection between the institution and the plebeian roads. In this regard, it is a significant presence at the church, a hospice for travelers, now corresponding to the oratory of the Company. The facade of the church is facing a small square where the statue of St. Peter, Girolamo accused. The church has three entrance gates and a restoration was dated in 1776 and was rebuilt by the parish priest made Leonardo di Bernardo de ‘Medici, bishop of Forli and presents a sixteenth-century style. In 1906 it was rebuilt the bell tower, which has a square shape, the original 1607. The church is filaretto, raised in the middle and inside has three naves, five round arches, supported by five pillars square: the doubt remains whether the arches were supported by pillars or columns hidden within them, since the church underwent restoration, with which, among other things, the floor was raised, and were sometimes made to cover in the eighteenth century. The apse was demolished and was replaced by a rectangular platform, but left traces of the old building, which make sense of the ancient origin. The octagonal baptismal font in glazed terracotta by Giovanni della Robbia School, (c. 1508) is six-sided, bearing pictures representing the life of St. John the Baptist and the Medici coat of arms on the corners. The church houses a wooden crucifix on the altar, attributed to Raffaello da Montelupo. In the rectory, to which belongs a large room of the sixteenth century, there is a painting of the Madonna and Child, attributed to Lorenzo di Credi and a fifteenth-century terracotta relief, Virgin and Child.

FORTEZZA DI SAN MARTINOFORTRESS OF MARTINO

Attualmente la fortezza e in restauro.fortezzasanmartino.sanpieroasievoThe Fortress of San Martino occupies an entire hill overlooking the village of San Piero a Sieve and much of the Mugello. Its construction was strongly desired by Cosimo I de ‘Medici to put a bulwark to defend the possessions of the family and the state Fiorentino well as to meet the pressing demands of local people, tired of the continual looting perpetuated against them by the army and coming bands from the north. From the official biography of Cosimo motivation uficiale reads “… because that way you could want from any havesse axles be free till the state of Florence in Florence with any great multitude of people, though, be without any border that you can fight. .. “. The design of the new fort was entrusted to architect Baldassarre Lanci., Former head of the fortifications of Grosseto, Siena and Radicofani, and the first stone was laid June 30, 1569. Two years after launching the company died and was continued by Bernardo Buontalenti went to work for long, given also the scale of the transaction, which was completed only in 1608 during the reign of Ferdinand I.
The Fortress of San Martino is rightly considered one of the largest Italian fortifications of all time, practically it is a fortified hill as its ramparts are perfectly adapted to the shape of the ground. It has an irregular but very close to the rectangle shape reinforced by nine bastions, those of north-west and south-east twins, and two ports: Fiorentina and Bologna to the south to the north. Inside the gigantic walls, curtains made of brick shoe, stands the keep, in practice a strong smaller, also with irregular shape with five sides, with walls and ramparts. Its location is close to the Porta Fiorentina, on the front where it was assumed the risks of attack were children. In the remaining area there were wind mills, barracks, storage depots for weapons and ammunition, tanks, repair shops and manufacturing of guns and other firearms and a chapel.
Looking at this we can come up with the Fortress of Poggio Imperiale in Poggibonsi to St. Martin but we’re not in front of a city but on a purely military complex that can hold an entire army! Maybe it was the construction of Lucera Anjou (1269-1283) in Italy was not undertaken such a task. E ‘San Martino also beginning to change the relationship between artefact and landscape in the works of the Italian defense static: the increasing tendency to lower the height in relation to horizontal extension in order to offer less and less in front of the artillery .
Several times and restored after the earthquake of 1762 the fort was disbanded in 1784 by Leopold I, who thought it unnecessary and expensive, since stopped the threat of invasion from the north. The barracks were converted into houses and dwell in it begins the realization to the farmers of the area. The walls were let go slowly decaying. A few years later, during the French invasion of Tuscany, a small military garrison for the last time he took possession of the fortress in turning most of the gunner gunner. Since then, the largest fortification Renaissance Tuscany was left to itself so that today, virtually unknown and considered less than many other minor works, lying abandoned on the hill like a dying giant, and is visible only from the outside, although in recent years has undergone partial restoration. Hers, after all, good condition today is due to the high quality work. Currently the fort is being restored.

CONVENTO FRANCESCANOFRANCISCAN MONASTERY

There is a precious crucifix by Donatello. Most likely it was founded by Ubaldini in the sixth century, then became the monastery of Basilian (XI century), and thereafter until 1206 was occupied by some hermits and then donated, along with much of the forest to St. Francis of Assisi (Franciscans entered in this convent in 1212). Lived here, among others, the Venerable John of Perugia said Barefoot, Vicar General at the time of St. Francis and his father Benedict Gavorraccio. In 1349 the monastery was almost abandoned because of fever and flourished only in 1420 when Cosimo the Elder, after having bought it, rebuilt it, had it enlarged the dining hall, built the bell tower, cloister, sacristy, the cistern and the lodge , the latter designed by Michelozzo, who changed the church of St. Bonaventure, including the monastery, providing it with a portico with columns outside, but inside, embellished with the nave of the vaults and expanded the polygonal choir. Appended to this altarpiece is a wood of the seventeenth century, inlaid with gold, bearing the arms of the Medici.

In 1542 an earthquake caused considerable damage to the monastery, especially the bell tower. It was again depleted with the abolition by Napoleon Bonaparte, the fall of which the brothers were able to return there until 1866, when it was again suppressed by the Italian government. However, the new owner, the Marquis Gerini, returned it to the Franciscans, having restored the church. In the church there is also a painting by Jacopo Ligozzi with initials and date, 1579, the institution of the Third Order Franciscan and a highly decorated altar of the sixteenth century, the vestry has a fresco of the Florentine School from the first half of the fifteenth century . Finally, in the cloister, is the Museum of Sacred Art which houses a wooden crucifix, discovered in 1950 and attributed to Donatello or his workshop (1460). The museum also houses vestments, religious objects of the convent, some of which are the emblem of the Gerini. From the cloister you pass in the refectory of Michelozzo garden and garden, adjacent to the cells of the friars. Giuliano Ughi the buck, Less Observant of the sixteenth century, wrote of the origin and progress report of the Convento del Bosco. He died and was buried in the Convent.

CASTELLO DEL TREBBIOCASTLE TREBBIO

castellodeltrebbio.sanpieroasieveDi origine medicea.
