CATTEDRALECATHEDRAL

La facciata cuspidata ha un notevole sviluppo in altezza che riflette la ripartizione interna a tre navate.cattedrale.sanminiatoThe church became a cathedral in 1622 when San Miniato was elevated to a diocese, is known as the square of Prato cathedral, the area of the ancient citadel, which is dominated by the fortress and the tower of Frederick II. It is the oldest part of the city, which brings together the Cathedral, the Bishop’s Palace and the Palace of the Imperial Vicar. The church was built in the twelfth century, perhaps on an older chapel. Dedicated to Santa Maria, is cited for the first time in 1195 in a bull of Pope Celestine III, who recalls her dependence on the parish of St. Genesius of Vico Wallari. When in 1248 it was destroyed the village of Lombard foundation that lies at the foot of San Miniato, Santa Maria bought the baptismal font and the title of San Genesio. In 1274 the sculptor realized there Arogno comacino Giroldo from the bas-relief of the Annunciation. San Miniato in 1369 when he joined the Florentine domains, including the reorganization of the fortress the church that became inaccessible to the faithful. Only in 1489, with the stabilization of political situation, the vicar of the church in Florence returned to the local clergy. It was reopened after an expansion that included the bell tower, an imposing building with a square plan, known as the Tower of Matilde. A brick wall facing the warm reddish hue characterizes the exterior of the building of simple and strong. The facade cuspidata has a significant vertical development that reflects the internal division with three naves.
