The parish church of Santa Maria and San Giovanni Battista is a punch in the town of San Giuliano Terme, on the ancient Via Aemilia Scauri, later known as the Via Julia Augusta, and finally National Road 12 Abetone and Brenner. Attested from 1069, the austere church was located along the ancient route that linked foothills Pisa and Lucca, and in addition to numerous churches suffragan it also depended on the nearby monastery of San Paolo. The unusual plant with two aisles, of which only the larger apse, is the result of an expansion, perhaps unfinished, of a previous building that took place between the twelfth and thirteenth century. Separated from the church is the imposing bell tower was rebuilt after the bombings of 1944. Inside, now bare of furniture, two important works are preserved fourteenth century, a wooden crucifix of the Pisan school and a panel painting of the Madonna and Child by Nerucci of Frederick.
The Parish of St. Peter and St. John the Baptist, now under the title of San Marco Rigoli is in the municipality of San Giuliano Terme, on the ancient Via Aemilia Scauri, later known as the Via Julia Augusta, and finally of State Route 12 ‘ Abetone and Brenner. The first signs of some church in the community of “Rigoli and Corliano” dating back to the XI century. Marked by a basilica with three apses and pillars, the building shall conform to the architecture of the eleventh century, most evident in the apse, where the blind arches crowning insist on shelves. It is possible that the interior and the facade is a little later, perhaps as early as the twelfth century. A testimony of the building can be seen in the early medieval baptismal font, made by Lombard production, the VIII-IX centuries. In the parish church also houses an exquisite painting of the Madonna Enthroned with Angels, signed by Turino Vanni, Pisan painter between fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

The plant has a single nave with a semicircular apse and covered with cross vaults, supported by a transverse arch set to half-pillars. The result of a restoration of the twentieth century is the bell tower. The crypt is divided into four small aisles of three bays. The front has the upper floors, topped by an action of bricks arranged in sawtooth, supported by corbels. The bottom is marked by five arches, the central, larger, is contained in the portal where the bezel is inserted a fragment of medieval sculpture. The small capital of the semi that support the arches are decorated with geometric and anthropomorphic. The apse shows a rich plastic decoration.
Situated on a hill 310 meters high, the castle dominates a sloping cliff of clay on the right side of the river valley Ace and the town, beautiful medieval village. The site was first inhabited by the Etruscans and the Middle Ages became a stronghold of various imperial officials stationed in Tuscany [families of Paltronieri Forteguerri, Scolari, Ardengheschi of Civitella] and the subject of disputes between the bishops of Arezzo and Siena until 1178, when it was recognized on the sovereignty of the high castle town of Siena. The area where stands the fortified nucleus is called ‘Borghetto’. Its construction was carried out in several stages between the 12th and 14th century on the original drawing by Agostino and Agnolo di Ventura, Sienese architects. Since 1200, San Giovanni d’Asso been home to many noble families of Siena [Buonsignori, Salimbeni, Petroni, who in 1313 undertook major work on the extension], then ‘grange’ [name that defines the mighty fortified farms with moats, drawbridges , cellars, wells, mills were born for the sieges and protect the crops stored in it] of the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, confirming the close historical ties with the headquarters of the former republic. Since the 15th century Siena exercised direct rule over San Giovanni d’Asso. The castle consists of a large rectangular building, all brick base with a strong slope, reminiscent of a stately home rather than a real castle, accentuated by the almost complete disappearance of similarity, except for scant remains on the southern front , the battlements that once crowned it. The main facade is characterized by a series of orders for single and double windows, some still intact perfattamente with the center column of marble, both Gothic and Romanesque style. Beautiful courtyard with an arcade, which can be reached through a steep slope with a vaulted roof connected to the only two entrances to the castle: the main gate located near the corner of north-west and e-mail on the opposite side from side of the square of the old part of the country. Adjacent to the castle is the village that still retains some traces of city walls and a corner tower.
