As San Casciano, cells also became a possession of the Visconti di Campiglia, but unlike the spa and the castle of Fighine was not under the control of the ancient feudal family, but by the end of the fourteenth century it became part of the possessions Salimbeni of Siena and family, especially with Cione Sandro Salimbeni, found himself repeatedly in open hostilities with Siena. On 23 March 1384 Cione managed to recover cells from Siena and obtained the grant to be able to rebuild the walls and the fortress. Cocco Salimbeni in 1404, the son of Cione, declared himself a subject of Siena, but it was hoped that peace was soon to arrive due to the capture of cells by Nanni Piccolomini, also a member of the Sienese nobility. Only 14 March 1418 cells definitively joined the Republic of Siena being inserted into giuridiszione the Mayor of San Casciano. Like all castles in the area remained faithful to Siena until August 5, 1559 when the last bastion of freedom represented by the Republic of Siena to Montalcino Retreat capitulated in the face of overwhelming imperial forces and Medici. To embellish the history of Celle was certainly the poet’s stay here Carducci Michael followed his father into his profession as a doctor. On April 3, 1851 the City of San Casciano dei Bagni entrusted the task of medical Celle sul Rigo with Michael Carducci. On July 26, 1854 Carducci resigned because of continuous conflict with Gonfaloniere, but still continued until December 1855 to provide their cells where the entire population, was fond of her.

PIEVE DI SAN BARTOLOMEOABBEY OF SAN BARTOLOMEO

With interesting carved capitals. Mentioned in 1103 between the churches assigned to the diocese of Fiesole, although some interventions of the thirties of the twentieth century has managed to keep the Latin alphabet. The scheme has three naves with semicircular apse decorated with a single application of the bill rather rough arches, which contrasts with the perfect execution of many of the architectural details. The capital of the right column, decorated with rosettes and angular anthropomorphic heads, dating from the twelfth century. Inside, there are a glazed terracotta from the workshop of Andrea della Robbia, the Crowned Madonna and Child, St. Bartholomew and St. Francis, and a table with the fifteenth-century Madonna and Child with Saints attributed to the Master of San Miniato.

ANTICO FEUDOANCIENT FIEF

Accounts belonged to the bishops of Fiesole. Turicchi today met a group of houses around the parish church of San Pietro. Always been the place that was once more populous than now (but never exaggerated if its population counted more than 685 souls in 1729) was named as the villa of Turicchi. Set in a decentralized part of the town of Rufina, Turicchi owes its name to the presence of a guard tower, or to defend the steep valley below, hence the name derives Turricula, or perhaps Tower Torricella, with which the inhabitants of the area indicated the site. The more correct form of the name appears with a small variation in one of the first documents, that of 1134. As has been passed to Turicchi do not know, but behind this condition the inhabitants of Val di Sieve wanted to recognize that group of houses in a natural position of defense and the center of a vast courtyard. The site currently houses a medieval layout and it was in the middle ages who lived Turicchi the most important period in its history, having become a county of the Bishops of Fiesole, which was headed by a villa of the same name, the castle of Castiglione and Agna. Even in this place, as Castiglioni and Petrognano, canteen diocesan owned a residence where he lived the steward appointed by the bishops. Today is recognizable in a farmhouse, near a little chapel in the village called Pianettole, which identifies a group of houses that are on a detour to the right, before reaching Turicchi. Turicchi was then a fief of the bishops of Fiesole who got through this estate, the title of the day, exercising power over this territory, not only spiritual but also legal and economic.

CASTELLO PASQUINIPASQUINI CASTLE

castello_pasquini.rosignanoIn località Castiglioncello. Recentemente restaurato.

Recently restored. Pasquini Castle was built around 1889 as the residence of Baron Lazzaro Patrone, who both had bought large tracts of land of Diego Martelli. During the work was therefore demolished the old buildings of the former properties, while agricultural land were turned into a lush park romantic impression. The castle, built in imitation of medieval buildings, was helped by the caretaker’s house, neo-Gothic style, and a chapel decorated in eclectic tendencies. In addition, Baron Patrone offered some of their land for the construction of the railway station Castiglioncello, provided that the passenger building resumption style castle in order to harmonize with it. Baron was also interested in the same development of the whole village, but his projects, such as the hippodrome, were not followed. In 1938 the castle was sold to other owners and around the forties was bought by Pasquini. After a period of abandonment, in 1981, became the property of City of Rosignano Marittimo, which over time has made it the center of a series of cultural events, such as the Literary Prize Castiglioncello-coast of the Etruscans.

ROCCAROCCA

E ‘represented in the fresco by Guido Riccio da Foligno. The castle is undoubtedly the most important monument of the town of Alta Maremma Roccastrada if not for its importance as a historical document (it is depicted in the famous fresco ‘Guidoriccio da Fogliano at the siege of Montemassi’ of public building in Siena attributed to Simone Martini) and the high example of gothic architecture it represents. The fort, which crowns a hill 280 meters above the village, consists of two buildings remain prominent in the north is the Town / Mastio with the base of a sloping wall with several windows with wide opening that reports the function population and are not strictly military, the remains of a polygonal tower. Inside the Palace there are still traces of the beams which supported the wooden floors, however, followed a floor at which time the remains are evident. Building was then set against a large cistern for water, still plastered with lime. To the south are the remains of a square tower with loopholes, with remnants of masonry vaults and corbels worked well. Montemassi is remembered for the first time in history in 1076 as a property of a certain Count Hildebrand. During the ‘200, the castle was part of the possessions of Aldobrandeschi family and, among the many rocks that they had in the Maremma, was one of their greatest strengths. In 1260 the fortress was almost completely demolished during a siege. In 1306 the castle was subject to the allegiance of the accounts that had Pannocchieschi many areas in the northwestern part of the county. What we see today is therefore, largely stemming from the actions of the family and then the Pannocchieschi Verdelli. In 1328 with the support of Castruccio Castracani Antelminelli was the rebellion of the castle in Siena, but the strongest militias Siena managed to storm the fortress and to regain possession (this is the event celebrated the building from the picture above named public Siena ). The Republic of Lordship then gave it to Salimbeni (also see Rock of Tentennano) who lost in 1375 following a successful rebellion. Later it was sold, and then maintained for seven years, Mino Verdelli for 800 florins passed back to the Republic of Siena in 1404 the decision was made to dismantle the fortress in order to prevent any rebel rieleggesse the base to counteract it. Ferdinand II of Tuscany, with diploma of September 19, 1632 assigns a feud with John Montemassi Cristofani Malaspina Mulazzo. On April 7, 1770 I sold it to the Marquis Malaspina Domenico Cambiaso in Genoa, after which the castle was left to decay slowly. Today the whole complex is in a state of decay, despite having been recently carried out in stages excavations and restoration work (which have also unearthed the foundations of a church within the walls) and is planning a full recovery of complex. In July 2007 was completed the consolidation of the keep, with recovery and securing of a ladder for access to the platform above the tank. In 2008 it was purchased by the municipality even the South Tower (or Tower A) and the surrounding areas, with appropriation of U.S. $ 250,000 for the restoration, which began in November 2008. The old town is quite picturesque Montemassi for keeping still looks like a compact village to “cone” and still no trace of the walls, largely incorporated in the home, except for a door, which once protected him and connected to the castle.

CRIPTACRYPT

The crypt, buried about three feet, has a rectangular plan oriented east-west, enclosed by circular apse. The interior space is divided into three naves by four columns, which also act as support for the times of coverage of the environment. These were built by the installation of draft marl small linked by abundant beds of mortar, ideal for the construction of curved surfaces of the vaults and arches that surround the small niches of the west wall. The texture of the sides of the perimeter wall is characterized by the regular laying of blocks of trachyte mixed with a few others in marl. The west wall, straight, is embellished with three bottom circular niches. Remains of plaster would suggest the presence of painted plaster. The times they are coverage of the environment through the perimeter walls molded shelves with reason ‘bellows’, carved on two sides to the angle brackets and three for others, which vary in size show that the masons did not use models or templates for their achievement. At the center of the room the system is laid upon two pairs of monolithic columns with circular section of the western and the eastern octagonal, made them into a compact limestone and covered with a layer of smooth plaster. The rich and elaborate decoration (with plant motifs, animal and geometric) shown in the sculpture of the capitals in trachyte, all different, it is united by a meticulous attention to detail, making it likely the event of June, the highest medieval sculpture in stone rhyolitic come down to us today. It is therefore plausible to think the use of a group of workers with a cultural background and skills above average for a church yard tied to a wealthy client.
