castellocastelcastagnaio01.pratovecchioThe ruins of the castle, mentioned for the first time in 1050 in written records in which the castle is merely the possession of the Counts Guidi, are located on a hill that reaches 800 m at the foot of the river Arno, at the top of Casentino. The name of medieval origin, alludes to the presence of large chestnut trees that characterize the location, but the site was inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the foundations of a Roman temple, built in turn on the ruins of an older, found during the excavations of 1839 on the hill near Sunset. The choice of sites should be strengthened to Castelcastagnaio was privileged for its strategic location, since it allows you to control the narrow valley of the trench vincen step down from consumption towards Florence and at the same time the old road leading down from the pace of Croce a Mori from the Mugello. The sources also report the presence of a hospital for pilgrims. The position perched high and favored the sighting of all other members of the fortified settlements which Guidi, Be, Papiano. In 1164 the ‘castrum’ of Castel Castagnaio is mentioned among the assets of Guido Guerra.
At the highest point of the site are still visible remains of walls belonging to the medieval castle, which is not possible to establish the chronological sequence. It is essentially two walls supported vertically between them, the first of which consists in building work bag, and the second from square blocks of sandstone, gray-green, probably a perimeter wall of the bridge. To date the remains are enclosed in pipe support structures innocent in order to avoid the final collapse. This castle, built and used exclusively military function, there is also a cistern for water storage to rectangular, covered with a barrel vault. The sources report that in 1269, after the battle of Monteaperti, was destroyed by the Ghibellines. In 1391 it was occupied, along with San Leolino by Robert of the family Battifolle Guidi, Count of Poppi and Pratovecchio sir, upon the death of his cousin Guido, payable as a legacy to her cousin Elizabeth, wife of John Site and in 1440 the castle appears between The clothes, after the total defeat of the Guidi, were subjected to the Florentine Republic, by checking in that it will at least partial reconstruction and subsequent survival. At the edge of the walls is the Church of S. Bartholomew, rebuilt with salvaged material perhaps the chapel of the castle in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the bell tower still exists on a bell engraved with the date 1320. Inside the church are under the trusses, the fourteenth-century carved wooden brackets.
