CASTELLOCASTLE

The original formation of this settlement in the valley includes, according to various assumptions, with the church of St. Nicholas at the south-west of the village, where he had come to form a garrison for the control of the roads and collect tolls, mentioned in documents prior to the thirteenth century as “Malnido. On a rocky hill near the Magra, at the confluence with the river Bagnone, there are in fact the ruins of the Castle of Villafranca. The castle was the seat of the family of the Marquis Malaspina, and is remembered as early as the twelfth century by his nickname.Towards the end of the twelfth century, the castle of “Malnido” was contrasted to the village of Villafranca, recalled for the first time in 1191 as “Lealville. From an urban point of view, the village was organized linearly along the Via Romea and ended in the market square, near the castle, which is divided into three rooms stacked. In fact, the castle stood in the middle of a fortified village that was a difficult obstacle to overcome for those who passed through these places. After the division between dry and Spino Spino Fiorito of 1221, a further breakdown in 1266 led to the birth of an independent fiefdom Villafranca.Il fifteenth century saw the Castle of Villafranca in the center of many strategic interests and pass under the dominion of the Genoese family of Campofregoso which was ripped by the Sforza family, the feud that led under the control of Milan. The ruins of the castle, almost entirely hidden by a dense vegetation of trees and vines, are visible next to the railway line along a dirt road walking, after crossing the underpass in Piazza San Niccolò.

CASTELLOCASTLE

The origin of the castle of quotes is likely to be placed in the twelfth century with the construction of a square tower with walls resting on the hill Vignale, an alluvial deposit on the left bank of the river Bagnone. From this fort derives its name Virgoletta transliteration of the name ‘Verrucoletta’. In the base of the tower still exists today in a lintel a bas-relief representing a plot belonging to the iconography Lombard, then we can not exclude the previous source. The castle is located at the eastern end of the village. In 1449 Jailbird Campofregoso Virgoletta seized in 1471 and transformed the feudal manor mansion soften in the forms and making the gallery inside the court. With his death, regain possession of the Malaspina family feud for the sixteenth century and continued the work begun by creating a comprehensive Jailbird vaulted entry hall overlooking the village with spacious, elegant rooms and numerous decorations. To complete the work was Federico Malaspina, Lord of Virgoletta Villafranca and affixed the coat of arms with the lion rampant on the dry thorn, now visible on entry to the castle. During the Second World War, being Virgoletta along the Gothic Line, the castle became the seat of a command and German archives and furniture were burned. The rest of the damage to the castle is the work of the internal divisions of the inhabitants, neglect and improper adjustments made during the second half of the century. The current owners have restored to its former splendor of the interior rooms.

BORGOVILLAGE

BORGOfiletto.VILLAFRANCAIn località Filetto. Ancora oggi esiste l´originale impianto urbanistico.
There still exists the original city plan. The origins of the walled town of thread can be traced back to the Byzantine defense against the Lombards, who in the sixth and seventh centuries engaged the Lunigiana. The defensive system, the “limes” was based on a thread and Filattiera castrum. Fillet of the same name as that of Filattiera, seems to derive from the greek word “filakterion” fortified place. Thread was a member since 1351 of the estate of Malgrate, was sold in 1641 by Caesar II at the Royal Room in Milan and then to Ariberti of Cremona. In the village you can see the original plant, now the Piazza di Sopra, structured in a quadrilateral shape and defended by four cylindrical towers, one of which is still perfectly recognizable. The first core military functions ceased to exist, was adapted to a fortified residence and later extended by repeated actions up to the seventeenth century. The village can be accessed by two monumental gates, the south gate in 1500, rebuilt in 1700 with ashlar diamond. On the front of the church dedicated to Saints Philip and James is the Palazzo dei Marchesi Ariberti massive seventeenth-century building joined to the village and the church of two elegant passages connecting air, and on the opposite side of the square, the Convent of the Hospitallers, a vast complex of seventeenth century, with its beautiful cloister partly destroyed and rebuilt. Near the village is the oratory of San Genesio the sixteenth century, in the mysterious forest of thread, which seems to parties and tribal meetings were held since prehistoric times and where they were found many statues stele. A thread is held every August, the medieval market. For the occasion, the town face change and go back in time with medieval decorations, card readers, jugglers, minstrels, acrobats, and local crafts in iron, wood, stone and marble.
