There was imprisoned the assassin of King Umberto I of Savoy. The Linguella Tower, also known as the Torre del Martello, a coastal tower is situated in Portoferraio, on Elba Island. Its location is at the northern end of the bay. The fortification was built in the early sixteenth century the place where stood the remains of an earlier building dating back to Roman times. Its construction was commissioned by the Medici to have a more defensive structure to protect the port of Portoferraio, but was used in promiscuous mode which is also used as a warehouse for the storage of salt. The tower continued to perform the functions of both those who watch the stock until the second half of the eighteenth century, a time when the Grand Dukes of Lorraine decided to house its disposal and the subsequent transformation in prison, remained in office until the opening of more tardoottocentesca large prison in the Fort Longone of Porto Azzurro. After it underwent a period of decline following its final closure, the tower has been restored to its former glory thanks to a careful restoration work carried out at the end of the seventies of last century. The Tower of Linguella has a feature octagonal, with a crease in the lower part which is divided by defining the underlying base, that in six of the eight sides rests directly on the shore of the sea cliff. The upper part of the structure turriforme is clearly more prominent than the lower, culminating at the summit with some strong brackets that surround the terrace originally used for the functions of sight, the center of which is a small, circular base is not visible from ‘ outside the complex. The walls appear almost completely covered in brick, with stretches of curtain walls of stone walls that it took the northwestern corner of the tower, going to the outer boundaries Bastion with a base shoe, which previously gave a further element of security to the entire complex.

The eighteenth-century church of the Carmine was transformed, at the very end of the Napoleonic era, in a theater designed by architect Paul Wattles, a professor of architecture at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara, the designer, as well as many interventions Napoleonic Elba Island, including theaters Unafraid of Sarzana and the Teatro Regio di Lucca. The new theater was opened on January 24, 1815 and had the typical look of modern Italian opera: a horseshoe plant with 65 stages spread over four orders surmounted by a gallery. The painted decorations inside and the curtains were made by the painter Antonio Revelli Piedmont, as a stucco plasterer from Livorno Campolmi. After the final fall of Napoleon, in May of 1815 the theater was reopened with the name today. Throughout the nineteenth century in this space alternated performances of drama, opera and dance parties. At the beginning of the twentieth century the economic situation of the locals and the decline of viewers significantly worsened the budget deficit and in 1920 the theater was closed. It was then restored between 1922 and 1923 to a design engineer Visioli. On this occasion, were replaced with a new gallery on the fourth tier of boxes and the old gallery; were renewed upholstery, dressing rooms, stage and orchestra pit. After new restorations, in 1937 the theater was mainly used as a cinema until 1952. There followed a long period of neglect interrupted in the mid-eighties by a vast renovation work on a design by Maria Berta Betazzi made possible thanks to funding from the Regional Project FIO. Residenza Napoleonica.

Its walls are shaped like a star. It was the seat of the general command of the island during the reign of Napoleon. There was imprisoned patriot Livorno Francesco Domenico Guerrazzi.Lungo runs around the perimeter of the parapet walk at the gallery, where you start to beat the slots on each side with a musket shot. On the south-east is the seventeenth-century sentry on guard, one of the few still standing in the city’s defensive system. Inside were the most important buildings of the fortress, indicating that the star represents the center of decision of the military garrison. The main one is the Palace of Grand Duke or the barracks, the seat of the court and the governor, with two floors and a basement: the top floor were the boardroom of the war, the hall of the governor and the officers’ quarters, the plan ground the soldiers’ barracks, and various warehouses in the basement. Other buildings were the chapel, where he officiated the Mass, two guards and another two-storied house, where was the table of non-commissioned officers, and another building with two floors, the military prison, with 11 cells. The old military buildings have been reused as a civilian homes. Unfortunately, some construction projects were not properly respectful of the importance of this monument. The most characteristic structure within the walls is for the eighteenth-century lighthouse.

In località Monserrato.
