Still impressive remnants of the famous castle destroyed in the fourteenth century. The few and the badly deteriorated remains of the castle of frills are a short distance from the town of Poppi. . The only indication is present, even though almost illegible, recovering from aft to port. The ruins can be reached by following a dirt road that is on the right about 100 meters after the entrance of the golf club of the town Casentino. Fronzola, also known in the past as frills, was one of the many castles of the Guidi in the Casentino. In the Middle Ages its power was equal, if not greater, than that of the nearby castle of Poppi. The only reliable historical data I could find is that the castle was razed to the ground by the Florentines in 1440.

ABBAZIAABBEY

Prataglia Abbey was founded around 986 by Cassino Benedictine monks arrived in Tuscany. As stated by Don Parisio Ciampelli the historical relationship, viewed in the church of Badia Prataglia November 20, 1910 “(before) then that is not up here iscorgenvasi vast deserts and deep loneliness, mossy valleys, covered with lush vegetation, in whose breasts do not udivasi that rhythm sounding weak and uniform application of water between the boulders of quartz and sandstone, which was echoed by the serene regions of the air the cry of eagles and hawks, librantisi overlooking the deep dark abyss. ” The village of Badia Prataglia has an essentially modern appearance with architectural features typical of the resorts. The former is the parish church of SS. Assumption and St. Bartholomew, located right in the middle of the country, in a slightly ‘lower than the current street level. Founded before the Mill, the Abbey is known since 1002, as stated in a diploma of Emperor Otto III, then the foundation of previous Camaldoli. In a few years the monks increased in number and in September 1008 the new church was consecrated by the Bishop of Arezzo Elemperto, who also did enlarge the monastery, giving the woods, vineyards and fields along the Archiano, and in the parishes of Partina Bibbiena . From the founding until the mid-twelfth century Abbey Prataglia to increase its power and its possessions, thanks to a series of donations from the bishops of Arezzo, and comes with a Partina possessions, Marciano, Salutio, Gello. In 1031 the bishop Teodaldo subdued the church of San Clemente, out of Arezzo, the Abbey of Prataglia; up to 1073 members was called “house of the monastery of Prataglia. In 1084 another bishop of Arezzo, Constantine gave to the abbots of Prataglia Marciano. But the expansion of the abbey clashed with that of Camaldoli, meanwhile risen to greater power and fame, which gradually took over. Since the Abbey of Prataglia increasingly diminished the number of monks and the monastery of power in favor competitor, June 15, 1157, Jerome, Bishop of Arezzo, in the subdued Rodolfo, Prior General camaldolese, along with all the possessions, and anything in particular because of quarrels and fights arose between the two religious and temporal rulers, the decision was later endorsed by Pope union involved the observance by the Monks of Romuald Prataglia rule, however, retaining the title abbey ; monks prataliensi not willingly accept this decision superior, and only in 1183 William the Abbot prataliense Camaldolese agreed to join, but only in white clothes and the recitation of the Uffizi divine. Even in 1352, having refused the Abate Pietro Nocera Prataglia of the oath to the Prior General of the Hermitage, had to be reprimanded, by complaints from conservative Apostolic of St. Mary of the Angels of Florence, Nicola Abate di Lapo Ghini. In 1314 the church was rebuilt Prataglia, but the abbey survived only until 1391, when Pope Boniface IX suppressed definitively incorporated the assets in equity camaldolese, so the Rector of the parish was to be elected by the Major Camaldoli. The present church, the only remnant of the ancient abbey, has a very simple façade with a portal with a round arch, surmounted by a small window above the door and a modern terracotta with the glorification of Mary. The interior has a nave, covered by trusses, with a semicircular apse. Interesting is the crypt, located under the raised choir, with three naves and two bays, with arches and vaults, and capitals of different shapes, two of which, adorned with palms and acanthus leaves probably the result of counting are perhaps coming from some pre-existing building from Roman times. The crypt was restored in 1910. A rectangular opening in the wall used to contain the relics of the martyrs. It should be noted a human figure, carved in low relief, with raised hands, a figure similar to that found on the facade of the Parish of Montemignaio and that is the ancient prayer. The church, deeply transformed by a series of renovations, had probably two towers at the side of the apse, and if they were, he repeated a common type of church to areas of northern Europe. The two towers were probably torn down in 1510, when he built the house of the pastor and the two side altars and a font of the church in 1630 and probably the restoration of 1929, according to the canons of the time, trying to return to ‘original appearance of the Romanesque churches, destroyed the Renaissance and Baroque decorations stratified over time. During the restoration, in 1930, was also built the bell tower. A further restoration was carried out between 1969 and 1974 by the Authority of Arezzo, which were taken during the mock drafts of stone to put in plaster in 1929, rediscovering the ancient stonework.

CENTRO STORICODOWNTOWN
