Medici on the Sieve River which gives its name to the City. The origins of the bridge over the Sieve remain unclear: it seems to be linked with the Bridge in May talks by Lapo Castiglionchio (descendant of one of the two branches that split from the family of Quona – Da Da Castiglionchio precisely and Volognano) in his Epistle, or is reason to Messer Lapo (XIV century). In the absence of certainty, for the moment we can only assume the existence of a bridge, controlled by the family for the first Quona and then-after the conquest and destruction of the castle of this faction (1143-1146) – the city of Florence , it was probably more than once destroyed by the disastrous floods of the Sieve and rebuilt many times, because of its importance for communication from Florence to the Romagna, Casentino and Valdarno. The current structure dates from the middle of the bridge 500, as a result of the flood of 1547 when it became necessary to provide for the reconstruction of the previous stone bridge, destroyed by the flood. As a first emergency measure was agreed to establish a ferry service on the Sieve, who went to place alongside the two already existing in the vicinity of the castle, the one called “ship of St. Anthony” and another “step of Orlando” ( ASF, Capitani di Parte, num.neri, 698, n.131), the new step of the ship was leased by a “Monna Maddalena Salviati already a woman of Change” and initially led by John Miller of Mariotto, Piero di Vittorio Thomas Baron, chosen from among those who had suffered more damage (ASF, Otto di Pratica the Principality, 179/180, ins. Pontassieve). By edict of 23 September in fact the Grand Duke Cosimo I ordered that the proceeds of the ship was going to Podesta of Pontefract “in its common good” but this decision had prompted those who saw their property destroyed by the flood for more justifiably or not to apply to participate in the profits of the management of the ferry. To cut off all discussion and for obvious reasons of economic calculation, the community decided to grant the passage of ships to the highest bidder: the proceeds of the spell would have proceeded to finance the reconstruction of the bridge. In 1548 the judiciary Florentine Otto di Pratica resolved the rebuilding of the bridge, giving charge to Francesco di Luca Moro Bencistà and to draw up a comprehensive project of expenses. In the report they submitted on June 20 (accompanied by a draft which we are no longer in possession), it was recommended to rebuild the bridge was located in the same spot where the old man considered “the best self-assurance and convenience” (ASF , Secret Practice, 159).

In località S. Brigida.
In S. Brigida. In the former stronghold of Monte di Croce, property of the Guidi counts first and then the Bishop of Florence, the Pazzi family built the castle, sure extending an older, modest high medieval fortification. Between the twelfth and fourteenth century the Pazzi acquired control or ownership of all the surrounding lands and made Trebbio their stronghold in the heart of the countryside. In the fifteenth century the castle became the gathering place of scholars and humanists was embellished by a Renaissance portico with columns of stone and valuable works of art, like a fresco by Andrea del Castagno that once adorned the chapel and is now on display at Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The sixteenth century were added the windows protected by grilles. The plant has a rectangular shape, around the courtyard, accessible only by a gate protected by a tower opens in the center of the front of the curtain wall facing the valley, at whose ends there are two square towers. Part of curtain walls and towers are still equipped with machicolation supported by beautiful stone brackets and battlements built of bricks. Legend has it that in 1478 there was hatched a conspiracy against the Medici, who led the murder of Giuliano, brother of Lorenzo. Failed to plot the castle was confiscated by the Republic. The structure was restored in the last century, is now privately owned houses and a farm.

In località Camugliano.
In places Camugliano. It is native to the sixteenth century and represents an indelible mark on the domain Pisan Medici exercised for more than two centuries. A villa near Camugliano is reported as early as 980, in an act by which the bishop of Lucca Guido the grants along with other goods at some Teudegrimo Farolf son. In medieval times, the village suffered many ravages, by the Florentines in 1313 and soldiers of the Visconti of Milan in 1345. Only with the advent of the Medici the area began to thrive, thanks to the work of reclamation of the marshes by Matteo Botti performed at the end of the sixteenth century. It is at the top of his estate that stands the villa. Work on the construction of the complex were initiated in 1533 by Duke Alessandro de ‘Medici, but the work is carried to completion by the Grand Duke Cosimo I. A special feature of the villa is a fusion of elements from the era resorts with military elements. The complex was in fact a quadrangular plan and is surmounted by towers. The structures adjacent to it are designed with the function of stables and barracks. This very special appearance will be useful to the Medici during the uprisings of Pisa and the centers of the Valdarno, occurred in 1494 and 1530. Subsequently, the villa is given to Giuliano Gondi, as a reward for his loyalty to the Medici and in 1568 acquired by Matteo Botti. These changes in the area around a farm. In 1620 the villa owned by the Medici returned to the institution of the Marquis of Camugliano Ponsacco and, when granted, together with the territories of the town of Ponsacco, the noble Filippo Niccolini, whose family will dominate the area until 1781.

La Rocca Sillana, visible for miles around and overlooking the majestic summit of a hill 530 meters above sea level, in a privileged position from a military point of view. La Rocca allows you to control the strategically Val di Cecina and interconnected valleys, a vast territory which includes large portions of the provinces of Pisa, Siena and Grosseto. The legend, also under the name, would like to trace the origin of the fort to the civil war between Marius and Sulla. According to this hypothesis legend, the name of the fortress of Silla in fact derives from the cognomen of the Roman general Lucius Cornelius Sulla. According to most credible hypothesis but the fortress was built around the XI century. Belonged to the bishops, and then to the town of Volterra, which have long fought over these territories was then extended to a design by Giuliano da Sangallo in the fifteenth century when Pomarance came under the jurisdiction of the Florentines. Does not exclude any previous use of the rocky hill in Roman times. In fact the area are now many archaeological findings that confirm that this area has been inhabited since ancient times: the discovery of Roman coins from the time of Silla, the discovery of numerous tombs of the prehistoric times and Etruscan (one tholos of the fifth century BC), the discovery of a tomb of the Hellenistic period dating from the fourth century. BC, and the discovery of a Latin funerary inscription discovered a few hundred meters from the fortress Sillana.
