FORTEZZA DI SANTA BARBARAFORTRESS OF SANTA BARBARA

Fu utilizzata successivamente come caserma, carcere militare, distretto.

Built on an old medieval fortress built by the Florentines in 1331 near a chapel dedicated to St. Barnabas and destroyed by retaliation for Pistoia in 1343, retains the great tower and small traces of these ancient structures. It was built for Cosimo I de ‘Medici, who assigned the project to Nanni Hungary; the work, which began in 1539, were directed by Giovan Battista Bellucci. The intent was to put an end to the warlike ambitions of Pistoia, rather than external threats. The nucleus was enlarged by Bernardo Buontalenti which connects it with a new bulwark against the city wall. He was disarmed by the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo in 1734, having endured throughout its history only a siege, that of 1643, when troops attacked the city and the Barberini were rejected. It was later used as barracks, military prison, the district. Inside the Germans in 1944 shot four young Pistoia. Located at the southeast corner of the city walls, has four-sided bastion with strong walls made of brick embankment. The entrance is at the center of the curtain, parapet walls are tilted, the gunner on the sides are straight and vertical length of the curtain has developed considerably in height. Meets the criteria for building an architecture that does not include soldiers or large formal or decorative solutions as was typical of the military architecture of Cosimo I. Danneggiata gravemente dai bombardamenti nel 1943 e ricostruita nelle sue strutture portanti, lasciando smontati tutti gli apparati decorativi, rappresenta uno degli spazi rinascimentali di maggior pregio della città. CHIESA DI SAN BARTOLOMEOCHURCH OF SAN BARTOLOMEO

Il crocifisso ligneo dell’altare maggiore è opera di uno scultore vicino ai modi di Giovanni Pisano.chiesasanbartolomeoThe Abbey of San Bartolomeo in Pantano was named for the place where swamp rose. Its foundation dates back to Lombard, and is located between 726 and 764 by the Lombard Gaidoaldo doctor. We had established the Benedictines and the marquis of Tuscia had taken under their direct protection. In the middle of the twelfth century was renewed by the Abbot Good. In 1433 were replaced by the Lateran Canons of the Order of St. Augustine, said Rocchettine. They were responsible for the introduction of the use of practice on the feast of the patron saint, August 24, an anointing on the forehead of children to protect them from the snares of the spirits. More recently added the popular devotion anointing against diseases, particularly those of the throat, as practiced today, at which they sell special cakes called “crowns”, made in the form of a necklace with beads of pasta shortbread and a large medallion in the center and is a heartfelt holiday in the city. In 1779, abolished the Lateran, the monastery was entrusted to Vallombrosani who remained there until 1810, when the church was closed and converted into a parish. The church shows the forms desired by the prior good in 1159, respecting the typical characteristics of the Romanesque Pistoia, especially in the facade, adorned by five arches supported by slender columns and lined with marble bands dichromium, the two colors are repeated in different areas of front and draws other similar buildings of Pistoia. Also in the facade are preserved, the Roman era, important sculptures, such as lions at the corners and in support of the central arch and a lintel attributed to Gruamonte, where Jesus Christ is depicted with the twelve apostles, and it reads the date 1167 and the name of the buyer, this Rodolfino. The interior has undergone over the centuries many additions and renovations, which were eliminated in a radical restoration carried out in the years between 1951 and 1961: at that time a pavement has been restored in earthenware, were brought to light the walls ashlar stone mullioned windows and reopen. Were found traces of ancient paintings: in the apse on a blue background stands a Christ in Majesty with Saints and Angels performed at the end of the thirteenth century and attributed to Manfredino of Alberto. The restoration has included the rail of the pulpit carved in the middle of the thirteenth century by Guido da Como and the panels of another teacher now on the wall. The wooden crucifix on the main altar is the work of a sculptor Giovanni Pisano near the modes.

BATTISTEROBAPTISTERY

battistero.ptDel XIV secolo.

Realized, perhaps designed by Andrea Pisano, of Cellino di Nese. Its reconstruction in its present form was started with an octagonal base since 1301. A contribution to the project by Nicola Pisano is purely hypothetical and is rich in testimony on the work carried out on site until 1366. Restoration of 1975 brought to light in the baptismal date of 1226 and the sculptor’s name, Lanfranco da Como. The imposing monument, including the lantern with the golden ball and cross, reaches a height of 40 meters.
