Dagli Anni Trenta è diventato parco pubblico.
One of the first Italian trials of a new defensive system that took account of the use of artillery. With the conquest of Pisa in 1409 by Florence, they began work on the construction of a large square bulwark, the Old Citadel, near the Ponte a Mare. In 1440, the defense system was further strengthened with the establishment of a second stronghold, the New Citadel, located on the opposite side of the city. The project work will most likely also participates Filippo Brunelleschi, who was in Pisa in 1424. In 1509, with the second conquest of Florence, the fort was partially destroyed. Renovated and expanded in subsequent years and completed in 1512 by Giuliano da San Gallo, the fort was equipped with a powerful system of ramparts around the square tower. In 1798, the Scotto family bought the castle by Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine and transformed it into the garden, entrusting the work to the architect Giovanni heat. From the thirties it became a public park.

With marble sarcophagus of the third century. It was built by the Augustinians between 1072 and 1118 on a previous church. A little later is the fee for the regular clergy. The structure, linked to the model popularized by the Pisan Romanesque Buscheto, has three naves and apses, with gabled roof, outside articulated by pilasters, blind arches, round windows and diamonds on the side, alternating with single windows. The facade has three portals and mullion windows. The interior has a floor inlaid raised on a crypt with vaulted ceilings and Roman capitals, perhaps the rest of an old lodge for merchants, then a Christian church. Preserves a Roman sarcophagus, the remains of frescoes and a crucifix on the table of the thirteenth century. The canonical frescoes of the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries and stucco of the eighteenth century. The bell tower was originally a civilian end of the eleventh century or the first half of the twelfth: the change of use has meant that the building maintained the medieval narrow openings (instead replaced over time in those towers for residential use) .

There are also kept the chains of the port of Pisa plundered by Peter Grimaldi and returned to Pisa in 1848. The cemetery was begun in 1277 by Giovanni di Simone as the last of the monumental buildings of the square was given the opportunity, according to tradition, the arrival of “holy land” from the Golgotha, brought by the Pisan ships returning from the Second Crusade ( 1146). Tradition attributes the precious cargo to the work by Archbishop Ubaldo de ‘Lanfranchi in the twelfth century. These legends of the foundation are still widely used for other similar buildings across Europe. Perhaps it was simply created to gather all the various tombs and sarcophagi that were crowding around the cathedral. The intention of the Archbishop Federico Visconti in fact the building was to be a place “full and decorous, secluded and closed.” The thirteenth-century building languished after the crisis brought about the defeat in the Battle of Pisa Meloria (1284), and went back again in the fourteenth century hand to the work of architecture, redefining the structure completely. Architecturally it is composed by a high wall of rectangular shape, with the side towards the Duomo and the Baptistery more elongated. Outside is a simple white marble, with 43 arches and two blind doors. The main entrance is the one from the square, east, and is decorated with a rich gothic tabernacle above the entrance portal, the work of the second half of the fourteenth century, containing statues of the Virgin and Child with four saints of a follower of John Pisano. The simplicity of the external structure forms an ideal fifth to the monumental complex of the square, also particularly apt because it is based on an axis tilted with respect to the Duomo, Baptistery, making the square seem even bigger by the end looking for a game of optical perspective. This effect is particularly impressive when you look out the door in the wall near the medieval Baptistery. Telephone 050/560547 – www.duomo.pisa.it

Origin of the Medici. At the beginning of the thirteenth century the Republic of Pisa – now great naval power – decided to join the shipbuilding activities in a single large space. She was chosen the area west of the city, or that Tersana Tersanaia. The new Republican arsenal – complete with garaging and airports – took long and impressive work, and was completed towards 1264. Today there remain a number of ancient structures brick arches incorporated into the defensive wall along the Arno, and the fourteenth-century arcades dab of warehouses, ready to exploit the presence of diamond Auser River has now disappeared. The Arsenal grew in importance in the fourteenth century, when it was completed the last bridge in the city – the Ponte a Mare – and four towers were built. In 1394, the new lord of Pisa, Jacopo Hocheppan, began to transform the armory into a citadel of defense, in which settled a military stable. The Florentines radically transformed the Republican arsenal facilities and realized the Old Citadel to distinguish it from New Citadel, the current Scotto Garden, built in 1440 from the opposite side of the city. During the reign of Grand Duke Cosimo I, in the second half of the sixteenth century, the vast spaces of the Arsenale were intended for the breeding of horses of the Grand Duchy, while all the activity moved in the former shipbuilding yard of simplicity, where even today there are the vast warehouses of the arsenal of the Medici. Already in operation around 1540, the new shipyard launched the Medici in 1546, the first jail was built entirely by local workers. The Arsenale was divided into eight aisles – about 60 feet long, 8 high and 10 wide – and was part of a project to restore the former glory of Pisa, lost after the surrender of the city to the Florentines in 1509. Competition from Livorno and Portoferraio yards and a maritime policy changed, however, soon decreed a slow but inexorable decline. In the middle of the eighteenth century, in the Lorraine, the premises were converted to accommodate the horses of the regiment of Dragoons. Finally, in 1944, the whole area was heavily bombed. Today, Arsenal are set up in the restoration of some exhibits that are part of the important findings that occurred since 1998, the wrecks of vessels and utensils found in the former Etruscan and Roman port of Pisa, located in the area of railway station Pisa-San Rossore. This is a first port structure of the Archaic period, with the wrecks of 19 ships of different tonnage, dating from a period between the end of the Hellenistic and late antiquity. These findings constitute an essential element in understanding the mode of transportation in ancient ocean between the fifth century BC and AD V

In località Populonia.

In places Populonia. The circular semitorre Esedra, and dominate the Keep curtains. The town consisted of two parts: the ‘Acropolis, the upper domain of the Gulf of Baratti and the “industrial” on the coast, with port equipment and furnaces. Like all Etruscan cities, Populonia also knew the decline with the gradual rise of Roman power, suffering a severe destruction at the hands of Sulla during the civil war against Mario. Already in the first century AD the city was deserted, with dilapidated houses and abandoned kilns. In the following centuries there were attempts to reactivate the port and industrial activities linked to it, but in principle the life in the city never regained never great force, because of invasions and pirate raids which he was exposed. Populonia was reborn in the Middle Ages in the fourteenth century when it was decided to equip the village of the castle that still today, albeit altered, the hill overlooking the ancient Etruscan acropolis.
