Attributed to Brunelleschi. The fortress consists of a tower with about 15 meters long sides and a corner tower on the highest point of the town, 31 meters high, a wall connecting the tower with one of the towers of the walls, the Tower of the Wild. The circle itself at the foot of the hill is fortified by towers with a circular base and square, but it is only the northern section. Formerly in the wall connecting it pariva a drawbridge. The set, which makes the most of the land, made a compact defense system, among the finest examples of military architecture ineterssanti Fiorentina in the first half of the fifteenth century. Uncertain is the use of “Tower of the four-door” or Tower of Lucca, and for the presence of the four openings, one on each side, is inspiegabilemnte weakened both from a static point of view than defensive.

The twelfth century. E ‘regarded as one of the finest examples of medieval civil architecture, the son of an era in which manufacturers competed mainly in the construction of fortifications and religious buildings. The palace is set in an architectural complex, built between the twelfth and thirteenth century, which is difficult to determine the original destination. It can be assumed to have been made at the time of dominance on the village of the Archbishop of Pisa. A confirmation of this thesis is its proximity to the tower of Santa Maria, where he found the property by the curia of Pisa in those years. This would indicate a military function of the complex. The history of the Praetorian Palace, however, begins at the dawn of the fifteenth century, when Vicopisano, passed in 1406 under the rule of Florence, is elevated to a Vicariate Valdiserchio and lower Valdarno. Becomes the home of the vicar, a prominent political office that administers the ordinary justice of a rather extensive, covering the three podesterie Vicopisano, Cascina, Pontedera and Ripafratta. The “Palace place to San Francisco” is deemed suitable to host the vicar and will be used as a seat of government from 1411 to the early twentieth century. From the fifteenth century onwards, then, there have been many vicars, from the Florentine nobility, who have left the building their family crests in terracotta, marble or stone. Some of these are the work of the prestigious workshop of the Della Robbia and more than fifty of these jobs are still kept in the palace. The structure we know today as the Praetorian Palace has undergone several adaptations to make them fit into his new role. Being a place where we celebrate processes becomes immediately necessary to assign some of the buildings to places of detention for prisoners, to be shared in public prisons and secret prisons. Other rooms are added to its sides, in order to close the yard. In 1923 he was finally transferred to the Magistrates Court he had taken the place of the Vicariate and yet another part of the building undergoes renovation to create apartments. Abandoned in the eighties, the building has been subjected since 1986 to an intense work of restoration that has returned to its former glory. It was opened in 2000 and is open free every Sunday from mid-April to late October.
