Keep an interesting crypt columns with asymmetric and figured capitals. Of medieval origin, but completely renovated in 1781 and then incorporated in a mansion. Only the bell tower and cloister (now serving as the use of court) preserve traces of the structure. In 1947 it was discovered the crypt (now accessible only from the outside), consisting of an asymmetric environment identified by five columns surmounted by capitals with simple decorations. It belongs to the church a painting on wood depicting the Madonna and Child and six saints, Florentine work of the late fifteenth century. That so far considered a crypt, in the opinion of some academics is nothing more than the old medieval church of protoportico hours underground and inaccessible by 1600 (at that time a bishop of Florence reported an altar dedicated to St. Nicholas in the church below ). Several peculiarities of the “crypt” seem to date the foundation of the first basilica back to ancient Roman times, in fact part of the wall of that compartment, totally different from the other walls, was built with different techniques and is much more consumed and incorporated into the other. During the construction of the bridge on the border of Misileo, 1862 – 1865, everything was re-leveling the road from the church to the customs of the “Chestnut,” and some Etruscan tombs were excavated – with several Roman coins of several ancient times. The material was completely dispersed.
It was originally a monastic Vallombrosan recalled since 1090, was buried in the cemetery where Maghinardo Pagani, mentioned by Dante for his misdeeds. First destroyed in 137, the monastic building was completely transformed in the seventeenth century, when the church was raised to a priory. On that occasion he was decorated with valuable paintings (like the seventeenth-century Madonna del Carmine di Jacopo Confortini) that is sold today at the parish Palazzuolo. The abbey is privately owned. Inside the church are still the choir stalls, dating from 1771, and the baptismal font, made of ceramic in the early twentieth century in the manner of liberty Galileo Chini.
The church was founded in 1280. The building, floors, is decorated with small arches, and the facade is enlivened by lancet openings. Colonia romana fondata nel 273 a. E.V.
In places Ansedonia. Roman colony founded in 273 a. EV The walls that enclosed the ancient city of what was built during the third century BC, to protect the settlement founded in 273 BC.
