The Shrine of the Ash is certainly considered one of the most important shrines of the Maremma and reaches its highest point among the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The place name is related to Fraxinus excelsior, tree revered by the ancient Nordic and superstitious people also burned in the countryside of the Maremma, in order to ward off evil spirits. As the name of Frassine begins to appear in the documents after the Mille, the Church of St. Mary has Frassineto most ancient: the inscription in Gothic letters aedicule assures us that Madonna is a work of S. Mary in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and the statue of the Madonna, probably dating from the thirteenth century. The Sanctuary, a Latin cross, has three altars: the largest, with two statues is the work of Domenico di Lugano del1700 Notari. The altar on the right, dedicated to the Assumption, was built in 1596 and one on the left, dedicated to St. Sylvester, was erected in 1696. The statue of the Virgin Mary, preserved for five centuries in the monastery built next to the church, was lost. Still a legend tells that about 1350 a boor of the Val di Cornia noted that one of his oxen, every day, took refuge in the forest and there he remained for a long time. Seguitolo, found him kneeling in front of an ash tree that hid among the branches of a statue of the Madonna. It was decided to carry it in the church near the castle of Monterotondo, but the graces and miracles which multiplied in place of the discovery made everyone realize that the ash that Madonna had chosen as his throne of mercy. There, the Lady continues to be a place of pilgrimage, especially on April 25, Whit Monday and Sept. 8. A visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Frassine allow you to spend some quiet time, walking around the countryside and green hills.

Solo resti.
