Il castello attualmente è residenza privata e sede di una fattoria, visitabile solo dall’esterno.castellochiocciola.monteriggioniPlayed an important role in the war of Siena from 1553 to 1555.

To the disappointment of not having a male heir, in 1265 Ghinibaldo founded a hospital in the castle of Castiglione, who now bore the name of his ambitious owner (Castiglion Ghinibaldo then Piccolornini of Castiglione, now Castiglionalto).

BADIA A ISOLAABBEY AT ISOLA

badia_a_isola.monteriggioniDel 1001.

Walking through the Archbishop of Canterbury Francigena mentions in his diary Burgenove. The town was the stage XVI (Mansi) of his journey to England. The abbots became in later centuries the absolute masters of Borgonuovo and surrounding lands, so that castle gradually lost importance in favor of the abbey. This is evidenced by an agreement at the Badia a Isola stipulta the December 11, 1256 between the abbot and the principal or Mayor of Borgonuovo, which is consistent with the power to the people elect a person for the rector of their choice. The abbey was later also called the Lake, because of the swamps that surrounded the east.

TEMPIO DI SAN BIAGIOTEMPIO DI SAN BIAGIO

TEMPIOSANBIAGIO.MONTEPULCIANOChiesa tutta in travertino.

The building, summa of Renaissance studies on the Greek cross plan applied to Catholic places of worship, was built by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, which had as its immediate model the basilica of Santa Maria delle Carceri in Prato, designed a first generation lawn by his brother Giuliano da Sangallo. The same plant, derived from works by Filippo Brunelleschi, was applied to the original plan of Bramante and Michelangelo for St Peter’s Basilica and the church of Our Lady of Consolation of Todi, paternity uncertainty. The late-Renaissance building was built on the site of an ancient early Christian church dedicated to Santa Maria and then, after the transfer of rights Plebani, around the year one thousand, within the castle walls at San Biagio. At the beginning of the sixteenth century were kept only a few ruins of the church, a wall was still a fresco of the Madonna and Child with St. Francis, the work of the fourteenth century Siena, which in 1518 were attributed miraculous events. The people police decided to erect a new church, entrusting the task to Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. They designed an impressive building with a central plan and the ambitious project was supported by Pope Leo X, who had been educated by Agnolo Poliziano, a native of the Tuscan town. The construction of the temple lasted until 1580 and the work was directed, after the death of the designer, other superintendents. The building has a centralized Greek cross plan, closed on one side and topped by a semicircular apse at the center, with a dome supported by a drum. The main facade, whose compositional scheme is repeated, with variations ornamental, on the other two sides, is divided into two registers by a marked entablature frieze and metopes triglyphs that runs around the perimeter of the temple is located in the lower portal engraved with the year of foundation of the temple at the top, with a central window, the surface is enlivened by five rectangular mirrors. The second register is set the broad triangular pediment in the center of which is a circular eye. The prospectus is flanked on the left side of the bell tower soaring to more records, full of plastic and decorative elements, ending in a pyramidal spire. The project involved the erection of two symmetrical towers, of which only one was completed. In addition, the weighted volumes, clad in travertine, are articulated by eurythmy scans, as they are arranged the numerous ornamental elements (pilasters, engaged columns, niches, pediments, brackets, oculi) that give rise to a veritable catalog of aesthetics Renaissance .
