ROCCAROCCA

The extraordinary state of preservation of the Rock it different from similar fortresses profoundly altered in the area (Lucignano, Monte San Savino). A large square is part of the tower, erected in the center of the curtain north side close to the Barbican, protected by a second smaller square tower, stands guard at the marina. The only entrance to the castle was through a small postern cut into the thickness of the escarpment of the keep. A second door, but later larger side, opened the curtain outside. Made during the course of stone, with thick walls slopes (over 4 meters high), made filaretto century, the fortress has abundant remains of defenses to lodge brick, with lancet arches resting on stone brackets, on the outside the walls are made of brick and coincide with the walls of the castle. The tower was the headquarters of the garrison: floors and wooden staircase to be removed, they can be very defensive. The entire complex is under renovation [01/2005], which should make the artifact again open to the public.

The fortified enclosure fitted with a single port [recently restored] is dominated by the fortress, whose massive structure towering over the area, a few meters from the church of S. Stefano. A rigorous geometric layout, immediately betrays the only military function of the settlement. Today, most of the town was destroyed or incorporated into homes, but some elements still require attention: two cylindrical towers in the north-west and south-west, brick, are surviving elements of the defense angle at the center of Curtain revolt in Lucignano [West] there is the beautiful front door with external portal to all sixth, decorated with three coats of arms surmounted by the great Medici emblem in stone. A slight crown, resting on arches, is the basis of the clock tower, which ends with a large sail brick, topped by pinnacles. To the east you open the port, a postern, a small escape on the opposite side of the fortress. Characteristics a castle was you could not just lick it and come out the front door, but also through a system of underground walkways.

SANTUARIO MADONNA DEL MONTESHRINE OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT

Nel 1995, in occasione dei restauri, sono stati rinvenuti sulla parete dietro l’altare affreschi cinquecenteschi attribuiti al Sodoma.santuarioMadonna_del_Monte.marcianaIt is the most famous and oldest shrine of the island, already attested in the twelfth century. CHIESA DI SAN CERBONECHURCH OF SAN CERBONE

Una tela ottocentesca sull’altar maggiore raffigura San Cerbone.chiesasancerbone.marcianaIts origin dates back to the escape of the Bishop of the Island of Elba Populonia because of the Lombard invasions. San Cerbone chose as a refuge huts in the valley of Mt. According to tradition, the church would rise immediately after the death of the saint, in 575, but is mentioned explicitly only in 1421, with regard to the Franciscan convent of built on the site. CHIESA DI SAN GIORGIOCHURCH OF SAN GIORGIO

L’interno della Chiesa di San Giorgio si presenta a navata unica, con 2 cappelle laterali e con l’abside coperto da una volta a crociera con archi a sesto acuto, che si differenziano da quelli a tutto sesto del transetto.chiesasangiorgio.mancianoThe Church of San Giorgio was built during the fourteenth century and expanded during the Renaissance with the addition of the transept and apse (1430 approx). Over the following centuries, some interventions were made both inside the facade. A series of renovations carried out at the end of the last century and the beginning of the new millennium have made it possible to restore its former glory the religious building, which currently appears well preserved. The church has a Latin cross with a single nave with an apse and transept roof hut. The facade, in draft of travertine, is characterized by the portal architrave supporting a pointed arch, above which opens off-axis, a rectangular window, on the whole, while keeping the original stone structures, is the result the following reconstruction. Left corner of the facade, L leans against a small unfinished tower square in section, with a few ornaments on the walls, which was to become, once finished, the church steeple. On the outer sides of the transept and apse opening date back a number of single construction. The interior of the Church of San Giorgio is a single nave with two side chapels and apse covered by a vault with pointed arches, which are different from the round arch of the transept.

CASTELLUM ACQUARUMCASTELLUM ACQUARUM

Saragiolo, tel. 0564-602837), arriva a Montemerano.castellumacquarimMancianoTestimony of hydraulic engineering built in the early centuries of the empire. The route starts from Manchester, a town of medieval origin, which stands on the gray sandstone-type “rock”, dating all’Oligogene-late Eocene, with the same material are made of the oldest houses and alleys. On the top there is the twelfth-century castle keep Aldobrandeschi., Once a defensive structure and now the town hall, inside there are works of contemporary art and paintings by Pietro Aldi, Manciano nationally known painter (1854-1888 ), but also of Paris Pascucci Manciano artist, considered the last of macchiaioli (1866-1954). On the roof is easy to see wild pigeons (Columba livia), snow peas (Corpus monedula) and magpies (Pica pica), and from the ode to the twilight owl (Athene noctua) and the breath of barn owls (Tyto alba). Lower down there is a clock tower built in the fifteenth century., Near which stood the palace of the vicar. In the historical center is the church of S. Leonardo, probably dating from the fourteenth century., Which has undergone several restorations in the past, both in the twentieth century., Internally there is a font of the thirteenth century. Pascucci and paintings. To continue the path we have to leave the old town through Porta Fiorella, so named because it gave to Florence, leaning against a medieval tower, restored by Siena, once occupied Manchester in 1416. Near it is the selling point of the “House of Cheese,” in which grapes are ripened goat cheese and salami of wild boar (via the Ponticino, 40 tel.0564-629298). The last stop of the town is the Church of the Santissima Annunziata, oratory of the fifteenth century., Decorated with frescoes and “The Annunciation” by Pietro Aldi. Left the country, the route continues along the “Old Road”, directed towards Montemerano Farms, but the height of the house Giacomini meet a path on the right, which leads to Fonte del Cerro, built in the sixteenth century. and fed by a spring of spring water. We serve the people and the nearby hermitage of S. John, now completely destroyed. After visiting the source, go back to take a road on the right. The route is surrounded by plants typical of submontane deciduous forest: oak (Quercus pubescens), oaks (Quercus cerris), maple (Acer monspessulanum), maples (Acer campestre), the priest’s cap (Euonymus europaeus), ciavardello (Sorbus torminalis , etc.). Often meet old oak trees, sometimes “attacked” by the mistletoe dormouse (Loranthus europaeus). On the branches of the trees is easy to see folios and frutticosi lichens, biological indicators, which attest to the quality of air and water. The undergrowth is characterized by cyclamen (Cyclamen hederifolium), violets (Viola odorata), butcher’s broom (Ruscus aculeatus), anemones (Anemone hortensis), wild asparagus (Asparagus acutifolius, etc.). Interesting is the presence of “Lambrusco,” or wild grape, or “feral” in fact, comes from a Vitis vinifera sativa Vitis vinifera sylvestris one. Viticulture is an important reality in the territory, as evidenced by the “Wine Festival” in Manchester, which is held at the Holy Cross (around September 10). The traveler may encounter in the jay (Garrulus glandarius), or in the pigeon (Columba palumbus), or hear the song of a green woodpecker (Picus viridis). In hedges and bushy foliage will hide the blue tits (Parus caeruleus), the great tits (Parus Major), the wrens (Troglodytes troglodytes), Tit (Aegithalos caudatus), etc. .. present, but rare to see, are the hawks (Accipiter nisus), the honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus) and other birds of prey, while after sunset, the tawny owl (Strix aluco). The visitor may find porcupine quills (Hystrix cristata), traces of wild boar (Sus scrofa), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), but also fox (Vulpes vulpes), etc. .. Continuing, the path reaches the shelves of the SP, which runs through beautiful countryside around there are old farms restructured into cozy cottages (Podere La Commenda tel. 0564-625070, 0564-620984, The Smith Farm shelves, producer of olive oil and wine tel. 0564-625116). After this stretch of asphalt, signs continue to the left and the path becomes a path surrounded by greenery, passing near the farm Saragiolo (Saragiolo tel.0564-602607) and the “Baroncelli (loc. Saragiolo, tel . 0564-602837), arrives at Montemerano.

CASSERO ALDOBRANDESCOCASSERO ALDOBRANDESCO

The complex consists of two buildings huddled together on one side, a wider, less tall, square in section and one which is the highest tower of the fortress. The main building has a sloping base, fully lined with stone walls where windows open on three levels, the upper part, ribbed, crowned by a characteristic battlements summit. The tower is characterized also by a ribbed top and battlements summit that reflect perfectly the appearance of the other part of the building. The stone walls have fewer openings and the base shoe is far more pronounced and surrounded on three sides by curtain walls that surround like a small fortress, built against the bottom of the other part of the building.

SANTUARIO DI SANTA MARIASHRINE OF OUR LADY
