Its origin dates back to the fourth century. The new church – with three aisles, supported by columns with composite capitals, with an apse and transept – not much different in size from the early Christian structure, it is placed so strong affiliation with the guidelines neoantichi that characterize the architecture of Lucca from the end of ‘XI century. With this new spirit of classical elements coexist, typical of Lombard, which partitions and pilasters in the apse and the transept, arched molded crowns on shelves with busts human and lion.

Ricostruita tra il 1112 e il 1147. All´interno varie opere d´arte.
Rebuilt between 1112 and 1147. Within the various works of art. Despite substantial interventions that have succeeded over the centuries, the medieval architecture of the basilica is still paramount. The aisles are divided by columns, for the most part bare, imported from Rome, and many of the capitals have the same source. The cuspidate fresco depicting the martyrdom of Saints Vincent, Stephen and Lawrence is one of the oldest examples of painting in medieval Lucca and from the first half of the twelfth century. Among the most significant examples of Romanesque sculpture in Lucca is the baptismal font.

Mura urbane.
City walls. Is a welcome step around the city with an uninterrupted around 4 km. The walls of Lucca is the largest example in Europe of walls constructed according to modern principles of fortification that have been kept fully integrated in a big city. The current walls, about 4 km long and 450 meters, is in fact the result of the last campaign of reconstruction, which started in 1504 and ended only in 1645 according to a plan submitted by Alessandro Farnese from Flanders. Articulated in 12 with eleven bastions and curtains (those bastions in the city) and a platform were not, however, never used to defend against a siege, in contrast to the older belts, since they were conceived as a deterrent now unlikely expansionist designs of the Grand Duchy of Florence . The only occasion on which the walls were put to the test was during the disastrous flood of 1805 Serchio. The boundary wall has been transformed during the nineteenth century in a pleasant pedestrian promenade, and is, along the ramparts and the lawns in front of the walls, the main city park during the summer for a natural stage for performances and events.

Monumento nazionale.
National monument. Recent excavations have come to light Lombard tombs within the perimeter walls prior to ‘VIII century. The church is one of the finest examples of Roman culture in Tuscany. Already mentioned in 774 in Sottochiesa are the remains of a church (V-VI century) and a second with two aisles (VIII-IX century). The church, which has a basilica with a semicircular apse, is decorated externally only in the apse, where it appears a matter of blind arches divided by pilasters. The interior decoration is particularly rich: of great interest a pulpit carved with animal figures and geometric motifs. The iconographic program of the capitals is a real “encyclopedia sacred” obvious didactic intent: there are in fact depicted scenes from the Old and New Testaments.

In località Rincine.

In località Montenero.

In places Montenero. The Sanctuary of Montenero is an architectural complex of ancient origin: in fact, a popular legend tells the story of a lame shepherd who, in 1345, finding the foot of the hill a painting of the Madonna, had a vision through which he was urged to carry the effigy to the summit of the hill, where he arrived cured of his illness. In memory of this legend, at the beginning of the road that leads to the shrine, was built on the small Chapel of the Apparition, built in 1603 and replaced in 1956 by a larger church. The fame associated with that event was such that already at the end of that century the number of pilgrims allowed the extension of the first oratory, held initially by monks commercial, then by the Jesuits (XV – XVII century), and then by Teather (XVII – eighteenth century). It was precisely the Teatini to begin work to extend the sanctuary, which until then consisted of a simple rectangular room. Between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries was added to a richly decorated lobby and oval-shaped, while, around 1721 and designed by John of Fantasia, work began on the back of the church, with the inclusion of a cross-shaped body to house the sacred image of Our Lady, who gave it to the complex a Latin cross. After the suppression of religious orders by Pietro Leopoldo, the shrine fell into disrepair, until, Ferdinand III succeeded to power, was not entrusted to the custody of Vallombrosa monks (1792), which made some renovations.
