FORTEZZA VECCHIAOLD FORT

The curtain wall, substantially intact, it has a very complex form, with all the typical elements of the military of the time, such as withdrawn concave sides, the gunboats and a slotted rivellino pronounced towards the water in front. The main entrance is protected by a fence topped with defensive turrets angular features: at the beginning here there was a drawbridge, which was then replaced by a passage wall. From the fence, a tunnel leading to the remote side of the bastion and bulwark of the upper floors, where there are ruins of many buildings in service, today entered into a public park. There was a church for the garrison, and consecrated to the Immaculate Conception celebrated by the chaplain until 1860. Through another courtyard, surrounded by high curtain walls provided with slits, you enter through a tunnel to a port that looks at a small dock which came off water supplies for the garrison. Until the early twentieth century on the mound in the center of the fort was positioned to shoot a gun that was made to announce the noon.

CHIESA DELLA MADONNACHURCH OF OUR LADY

A lato della chiesa si trova il chiostro caratterizzato da tre porticati sovrapposti, anch’esso opera di Alessandro Pieroni ed in origine interamente affrescato; gli affreschi andarono perduti durante le devastazioni dell’ultima guerra, a seguito delle quali fu ricostruito anche il campanile, alto 29 metri e risalente al 1645.chiesadellamadonna.livornoThe church of the Madonna has a very simple façade, restored after the war and completely covered in marble at the top, aligned with the entrance portal is a window flanked by two smaller openings with a sinuous design. The interior is rectangular in shape, consists of a single aisle, along which lie the altars of the foreign nations. The altar of the French nation dates back to 1613 and is nestled between two marble columns that frame the painting of St. Louis King and which support a semicircular pediment. On the altar is similar to setting the nation’s race, then part of the Genovese, is embellished with a seventeenth-century painting depicting St. John the Evangelist. On the seventeenth-century origin is also the altar of the Portuguese, but in principle housed a wooden statue of Santa Maria, formerly preserved in the oratory of Saints Cosmas and Damian from 1728 and placed at the altar of the church of Our Lady, so , the Portuguese in the altar was placed the statue of St. Anthony of Padua, which had been placed on the counter of the church. The altar of St. Andrew was one of the nation instead Dutch Germanic, initially mostly composed of Catholic members (see the entry for the Temple of the Congregation Alemanna Dutch). Beside the altar stands a fine eighteenth-century confessional with the emblem of the Netherlands. Beside the church is the cloister arcades characterized by three overlapping, also by Alessandro Pieroni and originally entirely frescoed frescoes were lost during the ravages of the last war, in which case the bell tower was rebuilt, high 29 meters dating back to 1645.

CHIESA DEI GRECI UNITIUNITED CHURCH OF THE GREEKS

Gravemente danneggiata nel corso degli eventi bellici, è stata ricomposta dopo il restauro conclusosi nel 1985.chiesagreciuniti.livornoOutside, the most interesting feature is the facade of the church, far from the baroque movement, but sober and composed, with an entrance topped by a triangular pediment and flanked by two Tuscan columns that frame the central part of the prospectus, with a rectangular window . Until the Second World War, the main facade of the church was decorated with two statues of the innocence and gentleness. The works, recovered after the bombing, were no longer put back on the front, nevertheless, we read that in the early eighties were made of the work to replace the two works in their original location. Yet today, these works have had no success. The interior is a simple rectangular hall with wooden ceiling was rebuilt after the war. Significant but the iconostasis, a wooden structure of the seventeenth century, on which the icons are located and which serves to split the functions of the church reserved for the clergy to the faithful from Aparta. Severely damaged during the war, was reconstructed after the restoration completed in 1985.

CASTEL BOCCALECASTLE BOCCALE

Il corpo principale del castello è caratterizzato da due ordini di grandi finestre inquadrate in cornici di pietra; inoltre, sotto la linea di gronda, corre una teoria di mensole sopra la quale, prima del restauro promosso dai Witaker, si trovava la merlatura.castelboccale.livornoThe original nucleus of the castle of Mug is represented by a watchtower built by the Medici in the sixteenth century, probably the remains of an existing structure built by the Republic of Pisa in the Middle Ages. We stayed the castle and some soldiers, but the sizes were small, so that there was no room for the artillery. In the late nineteenth century, the tower became the property of Marchesa Eleonora Ugolini and was incorporated into a neo-medieval style residence, complete with battlements. Later the house passed to the family-Witaker Ingham who, in the early twentieth century, removed the battlements, replacing them with normal pitched roofs. The castle, restuarato recently after a long period of neglect, has been split into several residential apartments, while the park was rebuilt a small tower used as a warehouse. E ‘located at the beginning of the cliff Il Romito, a short distance from the Tower of Calafuria and Castello Sonnino. The complex consists of a rectangular, surrounded by three smaller round towers. In terms closer to the sea rises instead the ancient Medici tower, changed the location of windows and openings in the pattern of coverage. It has a footprint of about 5.7 square meters on each side and had a height of 13 meters above the initial plan sets the foundation wall and a shoe of 4.85 meters. The main body of the castle is characterized by two rows of large windows framed in stone frames, also under the eaves, runs a row of shelves, over which, before the restoration promoted by Witaker, was the battlements.

ACCADEMIA NAVALENAVAL ACADEMY

L’Accademia ospita annualmente circa 1250 persone tra Allievi Ufficiali ed Ufficiali che frequentano corsi integrativi e professionali.accademianavale.livornoThe Naval Academy was inaugurated on 6 November 1881 and initially took the only area of Lazzaretto of St. James, near of the church. In 1913, he was then attached to the complex of the Naval Academy also the adjacent area occupied by the existing Lazzaretto San Leopoldo. During the Second World War, because of the bombing that hit Livorno in July 1943, the Naval Academy was first forced to move to Venice and then, after only two months, in Brindisi, where he remained until 1946. Since the bombing had heavily marked many of the buildings of the city and also the structures that housed the Academy, it was necessary at the end of the conflict, to undertake a substantial reconstruction and infrastructure improvement, which lasted over twenty ‘and that year saw the addition in 1966 of the Palace Studies, which now houses the science labs and specialized classrooms. The main body of the Academy, which is accessed along a tree-lined street from the entrance gate of St. James located on the seafront avenue of Italy, consists of a large three-story building consists of three wings at right angles to enclose a large square weapons inside the wing root, overlooking the sea, is surmounted by a square tower with a clock with three faces and, on the pediment of the inner face, the motto Fatherland and Honour.
