In località Montegrossi.
In places Montegrossi. Montegrossi Castle, also known as Montegrossoli was the sentinel and the last bastion of the medieval feudal system established in Chianti. Built about 700 meters high on the crest of the last survey of the small mountain range that forms the boundary between the territories of Chianti and the Valdarno Superiore, always the subject of disputes between Florence and its enemies, overlooking the pass and the road linking the two areas, as well as much of the valley from one side to the other. The first news of the fort will have in 1007, 1172 it was conquered and destroyed by the Florentines who wanted to get rid of a big obstacle to their movements in the area. After a few years the remains of the castle became the family feud Firidolfi of Chianti, which took care of the reconstruction. There are reports that these landowners Montegrossi also used as a basis for actions of banditry and looting of caravans heading to Florence. Soon after the castle became part, as a strength, the chain of fortifications built by Emperor Barbarossa in Fucecchio Chianti, in the Lower Valdarno, to control the entire central Tuscany. But even this rule did not last long, and during the war between the League of Municipalities of Tuscany and the imperial forces, the Florentines repossess the fort. In addition to a strengthening of the fortress defense systems, given its strategic importance, was equipped with a permanent garrison.
