TORRE DI ARNOLFOTOWER OF ARNOLFO

He saw the birthplace of Arnolfo di Cambio, who was born in 1245 or so, the famous sculptor and architect. The entrance is on Via del Castello, in front of the Torre dei Paschi. The facade facing south, on Via delle Romite, is built of stone to the height of adjacent houses, while the top is cooked. The wide side walls, except for an opening on the east side, have no windows. The tower was recently restored by individuals who have enhanced and enriched the interior spaces with the frescoes of the master plots that Gino also wanted to depict scenes from the Battle of Hill 1269. It is said that the noble lady from the tower of Siena, Sapia Salvani assistesse to defeat the forces of the Republic of Siena in the war and the alliance with Florence Hill, as recalled by Dante in his Divine Comedy, Purgatorio Canto XIII.

TEATRO DEI VARIITHEATRE OF THE VARII

Dopo alcune traversie per il reperimento dei fondi necessari, il teatro fu inaugurato ufficialmente in occasione del carnevale del 1762, con le rappresentazioni della “Merope” di Voltaire e della “Vedova Scaltra” di Carlo Goldoni.TEATRO_DEI_VARIISituated almost opposite the Town Hall, or Priors, has according to tradition, ancient origins, the first hospice and then retreat of Saints Faustino and Giovita persecuted in the second century AD. Over time, the hospital would become the Via Francigena and later meeting of musical entertainment, theatrical and literary Academy of Varii, which acquired the premises in mid-1700. It was therefore decided to adapt it as a theater, of which the nobility and the wealthy class Colligiana (Colligiana which prospered as the economy in that period thanks to the many paper mills) felt the need. At Colle Morozzi Ferdinand, who became famous as a hydraulic engineer, cartographer and the Grand Duchy, was initially given the task of drafting the Charter of the theater. Subsequently it was decided to entrust the task to an expert in the field, Antonio Luigi Bibiena already on to Siena for the refurbishment of the Theatre of introns, which was destroyed by fire. The project included three rows of boxes to allow all the noble families of Colle to have their own shelf. After some hardships for obtaining the necessary funds, the theater was officially opened during the carnival of 1762, with representations of “Merope” of Voltaire and the “Widow cunning” by Carlo Goldoni.

SAN FRANCESCOSAN FRANCESCO

In 1229 it was given to Blessed Peter Gargalini Colle, a Franciscan, permission to build an oratory. In that year, with a special Bull, Pope Gregory IX delegated the Father Prior of the Dominicans in Siena to bless the first stone. It was therefore one of the first Franciscan settlement in Tuscany. The style of the Franciscan church respects the canons, who wanted the churches and severe essential, with bare walls and roof in sight. The “barn church” or “hut” in the church of San Francesco a true example. Four ogival mullioned windows opened on each wall, while one, the largest, was above the portal of entry. The vault of the choir, according to some documents of 1336, had to be painted. Eight were the wooden roof trusses of the roof had to be covered by a decorated table. The convent was to be equipped with two cloisters. In 1338 the construction of the bridge was completed, with nine arches, which connects the monastery to the city. Damaged during the siege of Hill by the troops of Duke Alfonso of Calabria in 1479, was re-consecrated in 1485. Pouring in a state of decay, during the 1700s underwent necessary restoration work with the buffers of the side windows and replacing them with rectangular windows and the construction of a time. Some of the stained glass that adorned the church were removed and used for other churches: Santa Caterina with the window, closed in 1736, is now at St. Catherine’s Church in High Hill, while the stained glass windows representing St. Louis and San Biagio are now at Siena Cathedral. The cycle of paintings on the walls this was during the time covered by whitewashing. It dates back to 1740, the tomb of the musician and organist of the convent Antonio Giacobbi.
South Side during the period 1767 to 1809 the monastery has also played the role of public hospitals and the cloister was used for the burial of the dead. In 1866 the monastery was suppressed and its works of art removed: St. Louis of Toulouse and St. Francis school of Simone Martini, Madonna and Child by Sano di Pietro Madonna and Child with Saints Dominic and Francesco Pier Francesco Fiorentino is now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena. Until 1883 was also used as military barracks suffering considerable damage. In the same year the monastery was restored again and for a short time spent in the office of Foreign Missions PP.MM.CC. of St. Francis.

PORTA NUOVANEW DOOR

Porta_nova_colle1The New Door, or door or Salis Solis, or even to Volterra, is one of the doors giving access to the medieval town of Colle Val d’Elsa. It was built of stone and brick instead of Forest Gate, destroyed during the siege of the city in 1479. Flanked by two strong ramparts and a ditch with the front (only recently brought to light) is a superb example of Renaissance military architecture. The original design is attributed to Giuliano da Sangallo.

PALAZZO PRETORIOPALACE PRETORIO

Also known as the Palazzo del Podesta, the Praetorian Palace in Colle Val d’Elsa, whose construction dates from the fourteenth century, has a rough side with numerous coats of arms (ceramic and stone) lords (Mayor and Commissioners) that have taken place over time . Over the centuries the building was used for various uses: as a forum for administrative offices, a Magistrate’s Court, with an adjoining prison, to homes. The prisons, in effect until the ’20s of the twentieth century, are located on the ground floor and still have the low original furnishings. The Palace has been the subject of a careful restoration in 1990 which brought to light the frescoes of Renaissance origin of a certain value, with decorations and badges. Particular attention should be given an “Annunciation” of the Florentine school. It has an outdoor courtyard at the rear of the building, with a high wall, which was used to time the air of prisoners. Both the front and the back shows the different renovations occurring over time. Currently the building houses the Museo Archeologico Etrusco Antiquarium “Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli,” and the seat of the Archaeological Group Colle.
Of particular interest, as well as vases and Etruscan objects stored and arising from some tombs in the area, the Lady with an earring or the Girl Porciglia (the resort where he was found). During recent excavations enough from 1996, were in fact found by the Archaeological Group Colle, the remains of a young woman who wore a gold earring still attached, of wonderful workmanship. Then there is the reconstruction of a neolithic tomb discovered in a cave on the 1988 Street of Lelli, just outside the village citizens. The tomb, dating from the fourth millennium BC, contained a number of buried and of these only one in connection with the remains, with few grave goods found are on display in the museum.

PALAZZO CAMPANACAMPANA PALACE

It was built to a design by Giuliano di Baccio d’Agnolo, as reported by Vasari, in 1536 and is partially unfinished. The facade has two floors, with a magnificent Renaissance arch flanked by four windows. The front part is made of sandstone and some plaster, which stand out with the colors of the sunset. The base of the building consists of a slope and a bastion of giving prominence to the building. The bow of the Palazzo Campana leads into Via del Castello, the main street of the historical center of Colle Val d’Elsa, flanked by a number of patrician houses which represented the civil power: the Palace of the Captain of the sixteenth century (later Palace Lights), the Buonaccorsi Palace (XV century), Palazzo Giusti (XV-XVI century), and the tower-house where he was born the famous architect Arnolfo di Cambio Colle (XIII century).

With frescoes by Bartolo di Fredi.
