Risale ai primi del XIII secolo. Cistercense romanica.

The construction of the abbey was begun around 1220, and was long: the consecration took place in 1268 and marks the beginning of Gothic art in Tuscany. The abbey was built with a Latin cross with three naves, with a length of 72 meters and a width of 21. The apse ends with six light windows and a canopy that make all the architectural structure of an extraordinary sense of lightness and elegance. Inside the abbey of San Galgano The building is impressive and testifies thus to the spread and large following of the cult of Saint Galgano. The abbey reached in the fourteenth century, a great power, thanks to the immunities and privileges granted to the imperial and the munificent donations. It was protected by the emperors and generously benificata Henry VI, Otto IV and Frederick II, who confirmed the same privileges granted more gradually adding others, including the right of coinage. Pope Innocent III exempted the abbey from the tenth. The wealth was reached in the sixteenth century that set off a quarrel between the Republic of Siena and the Papacy. In June 1506, Pope Julius II threw an interdict against Siena because he was opposed to the cardinal of papal candidate Recanati Francesco da Narni for the allocation of benefits and abbeys. In what might be called a dispute of a political-simony, the Republic of Siena, led by Pandolfo Petrucci, the priests resisted ordering the regular celebration of all liturgical functions.
