ABBAZIA DI SAN MARTINO IN CAMPOABBEY OF SAN MARTINO IN CAMPO

On-site Casanova monastery is still quoted on 9 July, 1148 when Abbot Guido bought goods to Sample the Arno, but in 1166, in a second cartula sample venditionis of goods, the same Guy is told Abbot badie s. Martini que est built on-site here dicitur Field (ibid., 38). Around 1179 the ecclesia s. Martini de campo is the southern border of districtus pistoiese. In the 13th century the area around the Abbey was a fraction of the commune of carmignano, with five, but the monastery for religious jurisdiction, was included in the plebato of Artimino. The monks entrusted the care of souls; cfr. the brief given by Benedict XII in Avignon for the parishioners of St. Martin in the field. The monastery is registered in pastoral visits from that of the Bishop francs (visit 1383, c. 112). Visit 1535 is indicated as abbattia St. Martini in Ordinis s. Speed: it must therefore reject the thesis of belonging to the Vallombrosan Order supported by some authors (Beani, Lucca). Suppressed the monastery, the goods were in commenda family frescobaldi of Florence, which, even at the end of the seventeenth century, it was for the patronage over the Church which held the parish functions with a secular priest. The Romanesque church, changed several times during the middle ages and restored in 1951, still retains much of the original character. www.abbaziasanmartino.com

Sempre a Caprese si può visitare, però fuori delle mura, la piccola chiesa duecentesca di San Giovanni Battista, nella quale Michelangelo fu battezzato.CASANATALEBUONARROTI-CapreseMichelangeloAnd ‘the house which was the birthplace of the famous artist.
