PARCO ARCHEOLOGICOARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK

Centre of extraordinary interest in the field of Etruscan archaeology d depends. Excavations started around 1965, in Capraia e Limite, have given way to the birth of Montereggi Archaeological Park, which collects testimonies to the presence of ancient civilizations that populated the banks of the Arno River, some of which are older at the time of the Etruscans. Thanks to the work, conducted by the archaeological museum and ceramics of Montelupo, were unearthed artifacts that you think can be traced back to the 12TH century, the so-called bronze age, in addition to the discovery of two huts for the same period, rather well preserved. Among the objects found there are artefacts in bone, pottery, pots, stoves and olle decorated. According to scholars the first permanent settlements in the area of Monterggi occur in the early 5th century BC. The Etruscan presence was very large and it lasted until the 1st century BC at least. The Etruscans at the time, decide to settle in the area because of its location along an old path that leads to Pistoia from Montalbano. At the beginning of activities in the territories were found pots and invoice rather rough objects such as olle, household containers, and tools for weaving.Chronological reconstruction of the fitted line of evidence, we then identified a group of artifacts chronologically later, showing enrichment of the area through trade. The Arno, in Etruscan, is definitely a conduit for trade with the peoples of the Mediterranean. This would explain the settlement of considerable size along its banks. Among the objects dating from the fifth century BC there is indeed a “Attic kylix, a plate of painted terracotta attributed to the Athenian painter Codros. Montereggi is also likely to be one of the places from which the Hellenic ceramics have spread throughout the Val di Pesa and Val d’Elsa. The trade in wine between the Etruscans and peoples instead of Lazio is demonstrated by the numerous amphorae found, dating back to different periods between the fourth and second century BC The area was abandoned by the Etruscans around the middle of the first century BC, following the ‘ affirmation of the Romans. Their presence is attested by the numerous jars found in the low wall. Of origin varies, we witness the rise of trade with North Africa, a producer of wines, Spain, from which comes the oil, and probably also with the East.

ABBAZIAABBEY

abbaziasmartinoincampo-capraiaelimiteIn località San Martino in Campo.

Dates from the time of the first groups on the Christian Montalbano. Apse of the eleventh century, with traces of frescoes. Its origin appears to be as convents and may be related to an ancient road, the medieval ridge from the river, crossed at the narrowest point (area of Gonfolina), arrived in Pistoia. It would therefore be treated in an old “hospital”, a stopping point for pilgrims to the church of San Giusto, Sant’Alluccio tower (which has remained only as a name), followed by Hospice of San Baronto. The first reliable historical document is dated to 1057 years in which the Bishop of Pistoia Martino founded the monasterium S. Martini situm Casa Nova. In the thirteenth century is referred to the parish of Artimino and made a reference to a small comunità.Secondo some scholars, the monastery was inhabited by Benedictine monks in the twelfth century and 1464, when the complex was damaged or destroyed, presumably by the army of Lucca. The church, originally with three aisles, was rebuilt or repaired and then keeping only two of the three original nave, and then it is asymmetric. The recent restoration work began in 2001 have found that the causes are not excluded from geological origin of the collapse of the left aisle. In his account of the pastoral visit of 1535, the monastery is referred to as Abbatia S. S. Martino in Campo Orders Augustini, a name which is inconsistent with its identification as a current or Vallombrosa Benedictine monastery. In the sixteenth century, the monastery was closed and assets were given commendation in the Frescobaldi family of Florence. From the seventeenth century remained the only function of the parish, belonging, belonging to the municipality of Carmignano and the Diocese of Pistoia. In the nineteenth, the adjustment of municipal boundaries, the church was to fall to a few tens of meters, in the municipality of Capraia and Limite.
